Genuine FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT tends to be harder to counterfeit.
"I will not ... offer a burnt offering which costs me nothing." - 1 Chronicles 21:24
(What do our "good works" [Ephesians 2:10] cost us?)
But where does the fruit of the Spirit comes from that we are to go to for His workmanship to manifest in us?
John 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? 29 Jesus answered and said unto them,
This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.
Philippians 1:6
Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:.... 11
Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
So if we exalt genuine fruit of the Spirit as a pivotal proving point, then we are missing Who it is we should be looking to as our Good Shepherd & Bridegroom for abiding in Him and His words.
We need Jesus Christ's work in our lives everyday in countering the works of the flesh and that is how we mortify the deeds of the body by the Spirit when we look to Jesus Christ, the author & finisher of our faith to help us lay aside every weight & sin daily in walking in the light in fellowship with the Father & the Son and that includes heresy which is one of the works of the flesh.
Hebrews 12:1Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses,
let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions,
heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Romans 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. 13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
Colossians 3:4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. 5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:
We all are at our different growth in our walk with the Lord from babes to maturity and even then in maturity, there is still pruning to be had by Him so we can bear more fruit. May we trust Jesus Christ to help us to listen to those reproofs so we can bear more fruit.
John 15:1I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away:
and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
