Psalm 72 - The Kingdom of God Soon to be Established on Earth

Greetings donadams,

My tentative answer to this is that if the children of Israel had accepted Jesus then the Kingdom of God would have been established then and there. But they rejected him, and it was obvious that only a few disciples accepted Jesus. But there is abundant evidence that the "Kingdom" mainly refers to a future Kingdom which Jesus will establish when he returns as per Psalm 72 and many other references.

It is here now (Lk 11:20, Mt 12:28), and everlasting (Lk 1:33).

Greetings again donadams,
Dan 2: 44 And in the days of these kings (Roman Caesars) shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
I consider Daniel 2:44 will be fulfilled when Jesus returns to establish the Kingdom of God upon the earth:
Daniel 2:35,40–45 (KJV): 35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them: and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.
40 And the fourth kingdom shall be strong as iron: forasmuch as iron breaketh in pieces and subdueth all things: and as iron that breaketh all these, shall it break in pieces and bruise. 41 And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay. 42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, so the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. 43 And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. 45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

The Kingdom of God has not yet filled the whole earth. The kings do not describe the Roman Caesars as the prophecy speaks of the sub-division of the Roman Empire into parts of iron and clay and that the stone hits the image on the feet not the legs. There are ten toes and these correspond to the ten horns or subdivisions of Daniel 7.
Isaiah 2:2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the Lord's house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it.
If you consider the full quotation it will be evident that war has not yet ceased. Ask the people of Ukraine:
Isaiah 2:1–4 (KJV): 1 The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. 3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. 4 And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Literalism is a trap.

The kingdom came during the 4th of that vision, and is a totally different kind. All of the announcements as the NT starts are that it is here and at work. You can't miss it, but you can look away.

Greetings again EarlyActs,
Literalism is a trap. The kingdom came during the 4th of that vision, and is a totally different kind. All of the announcements as the NT starts are that it is here and at work. You can't miss it, but you can look away.
I suggest that you are ignoring what I stated in my previous post, and many of the elements of this are literal.

The kings do not describe the Roman Caesars as the prophecy speaks of the sub-division of the Roman Empire into parts of iron and clay and that the stone hits the image on the feet not the legs. There are ten toes and these correspond to the ten horns or subdivisions of Daniel 7.
During the ministry of Jesus the Roman Empire was at its greatest and thiis corresponds to the legs of iron, not the feet and ten toes which speak of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire and its subdivision into ten or more territories. Daniel 7 also describes the rise of the Papacy which was to have dominance over the faithful for 1260 years, corresponding from Justinian to the French Revolution AD 529-533 to AD 1789-1783 and from Phocas AD 610 to AD 1870 when the Papacy lost the three Papal States mentioned in Daniel 7.

The exposition by Peter in Acts 2 speaks of Jesus being destined to sit upon the Throne of David, but his present exaltation has been to sit at the right hand of God in God the Father's Throne.
Psalm 110:1 (KJV): The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

Acts 2:22–36 (KJV): 22 Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know: 23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain: 24 Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it. 25 For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved: 26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope: 27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance. 29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulchre is with us unto this day. 30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne; 31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption. 32 This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. 33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. 34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, 35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool. 36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Revelation 3:21–22 (KJV): 21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Jesus speaks of this future time when he will return to the earth to sit upon the Throne of David:
Matthew 19:28 (KJV): 28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

And Peter expands on the promise by the Angels that Jesus is to return and bring times of restoration and refreshment, an obvious allusion to Psalm 72:
Acts 1:9–11 (KJV): 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Acts 3:19–21 (KJV): 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

And Paul speaks of the future Kingdom which involves the return of Jesus and his conviction that he will receive hs reward of immortality at this appearing of Jesus upon the earth and he encourages us to have this same hope, by loving his appearance. Paul does not speak of heaven going of his immortal soul to receive his reward, but he thus teaches of the resurrection of the body at the return of Jesus to be with Jesus in the Kingdom of God upon the earth:
2 Timothy 4:1,6–8 (KJV): 1 I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the living and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; 6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

The ending is OK, as long as you mean the NHNE, like 2 P 3 says.

re David, as the passage says, when David thought his future King, he saw the resurrection, so that's the throne he had in mind:

31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ,
"This" is the throne of David. This is not isolated; you will find this to be the case all through early Acts references to David. The Davidics of early Acts is an astonishing study in itself, with Is 55 clarifying that things promised to David would go to Christ, in Acts 13.

We have to remember that when we are done reading, we have a hostility between the apostles and Judaism. Many Jews 'got it' from Peter's sermons and realized what was being said about David, and repented. But you are setting up a non-issue; you are setting up a case where there would be no conflict with Judaism. Same with Acts 13 or quoting Amos 9 in 15. Yet look at the conflict after Acts 13.

This is also what the issue of quoting Ps 110 was about. How is the Christ David's son? Yes, there was the physical lineage, but David called him Lord. There is no offer of two kings, which by the way, is how non-adventist dispensationalists had to come up with 2 atonements. Imagine reading Hebrews and thinking there were 2!

But most important, the kingdom (actually the "reign") is not with 'external signs'; the feature about it is that Christ deserves honor and this is to be told to the nations. Anyone who does not acknowledge this will be smashed, Ps. 110.

The New Heaven and New Earth is this earth with a change of government when the Kingdom of God is established on THIS earth Isaiah 2:1-4, Isaiah 65:17-25. The rest of your post is obscure and a lot of words. The conflict between Judaism and Christianity is the fact that the Jews had rejected their Messiah when he came to them, and seeing they rejected him then and had him crucified, he now will soon return to establish the Kingdom of God upon the earth by first raising the dead and rewarding the faithful with everlasting life in the Kingdom 2 Timothy 4:1,6-8, and then converting a significant remnant of national Israel and making them the first dominion of the Kingdom of God Micah 4:1-8 and then subjecting the nations and educating them in the ways of God Isaiah 2:1-4. Yes, Isaiah 55:1-3 is an important appeal to all the faithful. The sure mercies of David is the gift of everlasting life in the Kingdom of God on earth when Jesus sits upon the Temple Throne of David in jerusalem for the 1000 years 2 Samuel 23:1-8.

Why are all the kingdom of God (the reign) expression in the narratives about a thing that is present, working, doing things, but not a government as we know them?

Your short treatment of the tension between the Christian faith and Judaism is the problem of your view. You need to articulate and cover all the details. Judaism's mistake is not that they didn't believe he should be their governmental king. The conflict is that what they thought was coming was mistaken and is not. John 12:34 'we've heard from the Law that Messiah will reign forever' His answer: 'walk in the light while you can' Two very different views. His kingdom came and there is no other grammatical conclusion about Acts 2:30 but that David saw the resurrection as the Davidic enthronement.

What he said about the kingdom undercut the zealot dream--and that's the real drive of 1st cent. Judaism. Even as far into it as Acts 26, they still think a kingdom is going to come if temple worship is correct. M. Sanford THE COVENANT REVOLT at Amazon.

I can accept some aspects of what you are saying, but the Kingdom of God upon the earth is still future. Jesus was under under no illusion that the Kingdom could then and there be established. But he still taught a future Kingdom. He could not state "Psalm 72 The Kingdom of God Soon to be Established", because he came to teach the way of God as a prerequisite to entering in to the Kingdom. Matthew's record indicates this when he speaks of the early ministry of Jesus.
Matthew 4:23–5:5 (KJV): 23 And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people. 24 And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them. 25 And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan.
5:1 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: 2 And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Jesus was not interested in gaining popular support, as the above is the start of his teaching, and some of this includes a process of separation, as it was "his disciples came unto him". Many or most were only interested in the healing and miracles, and did not give proper attention to his teaching of Matthew 5-7. We could discuss what Matthew 5:3 represents by "theirs is the kingdom of heaven" and in a sense this may correspond to some extent with what you are suggesting, but even here I would suggest that this also involves the future Kingdom of God on earth, as I claim it also alluded to the language of Daniel 2:44, "of heaven" not "in heaven".

But Matthew 5:5 "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth" is a clear teaching concerning the future Kingdom of God upon the earth as it draws upon Psalm 37 where the faithful will inherit the earth and the wicked will be removed at that time:
Psalm 37:7–11 (KJV): 7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. 8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. 9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. 10 For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. 11 But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
This has not yet been accomplished and the present problems in the Middle East are some indications that the many details of the prophesies are yet to be fulfilled and show that Jesus will return to establish the Kingdom of God upon the earth.

Greetings again EarlyActs,

They expected the NHNE right after the destruction of Jerusalem. But a delay was allowed, 2 P 3. That is why the kingdom is not a phase of government on this earth as we know it.

Given all that is said about the accomplishment of Jesus in Ephesians or Hebrews, why would God bother with 'problems in the Middle East'; he has already--if they would look.

Psalm 72 - The Kingdom of God Soon to be Established on Earth

Psalm 72
(KJV - with headings added)
A Psalm for Solomon

The King's Son
1 Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s son.
2 He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.
3 The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.

The Blessings of His Reign
4 He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
5 They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.
6 He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.
7 In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.

A World-Wide Kingdom
8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
9 They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.

The Nations Pay Homage
10 The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
11 Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
12 For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.
13 He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
14 He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
15 And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.

The Earth Bountiful
16 There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
17 His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.

The Whole World Filled with His Glory
18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
19 And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
20 The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

Psalm 72 is another clear evidence that the Scriptures teach that the Kingdom of God will be established upon the earth at the return of Jesus. This final public prayer of David, although addressed to Solomon, looks beyond his time to the greater son of David, Jesus Christ, who will return to establish his Kingdom on earth, replacing the present kingdoms of men Daniel 2:44. Luke records the words that Gabriel spoke to Mary concerning Jesus' future rule
Luke 1:32-33 (KJV): 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Jesus will reign over the "house of Jacob" when he returns and "turns away ungodliness from Jacob" Romans 11:26.

The promises made to David concerning his son and David's throne are recorded in 2 Samuel 7:12-16. They state also that God would be his Father, and this is shown in its fulfillment in Luke 1:35, Jesus is the Son of God. This is the qualification for Jesus to be heir over God's dominion, God's kingdom, not only because he is God's Son by birth, but he revealed all the qualities of God's character, wisdom and love during his ministry, suffering and crucifixion. These qualities now coupled with all that he has received in his resurrection and exaltation are what is needed to fulfill Psalm 72 in the Kingdom of God, soon to be established upon the earth Genesis 1:26, Psalm 8:6, Isaiah 2:1-4, Daniel 2:35,44, Matthew 11:25-30, 21:37-38, 42-44, Acts 3:19-21.

Six questions:

  1. How soon is soon?
  2. Is there any Christian end-times doctrine that does not hold the kingdom of God is established on earth?
  3. Since we all know you are premillennialist, and since none of the verses employed in the op state anything about the millennium, why are they used in support of premillennialism?
  4. Given that none of the verses quoted specify the 21st century, how is it these verses are used to support the claim of "soon"?
  5. Given premillennialism asserts a physical Jesus physically living on the physical earth physically ruling for a literal 1000 years, where is the verse explicitly stating Jesus is physically living on the earth physically ruling for the thousand years mentioned in Revelation 20?
  6. Are you aware that premillennialists (especially of the Dispensationalist variety) have been claiming the kingdom will soon come and not a single one of those premillennialists has ever been correct? In other words, are you aware they ALL have a 100% fail rate when it comes to this specific claim?
