Forget the gematria calculation which substitutes letters for numbers . I used to follow that interpretive method years ago, but no more.
When Luther studied this calculated 666 number, he decided it referred to 666 YEARS since Catholicism came into power. In one respect, he was correct that this was a calculation of 666 YEARS of time passing, but he applied it to the wrong entity.
Scripture applied this 666 number to the Sea Beast character. The description of that Sea Beast included features of a lion, a bear, and a leopard in Revelation 13:2. Anyone who has read their Daniel scriptures knows that these animals were used to represent the Babylonian empire, the Medo-Persian empire, and the Greek empire respectively. So this Sea Beast had a combined biography of the power of ALL those former world empires subsumed into the final "great and dreadful" fourth beast of Daniel (in its then-current Roman phase), which John saw emerging from the sea in Revelation 13.
The most ancient of those pagan world empires which had held control over the nation of Israel over the centuries was that of Babylon under King Nebuchadnezzar. He first got control over the nation of Israel in its first deportation of the nation's captive nobility, taking place in 607 BC. Any of John's readers with the slightest memorey of Israel's history would have recognized that former humiliating episode when they were first taken into captivity, beginning a long period of exile from their homeland, with Babylon's destruction of their nation and temple in 586 BC.
John's readers were to count 666 years backward in time from when John was writing Revelation, at which point they would have recognized the "birth date" of the Sea Beast character. We can know from internal evidence within Revelation that John was writing the book at some point between late AD 59 and early AD 60, just before the catastrophic AD 60 Laodicean earthquake which leveled that city. Counting backward 666 years from that composition year for Revelation, we arrive at Nebuchadnezzar's first deportation of the Israelite nobility.
This 666 number is also called "the number of A MAN" in Revelation 13:18. How would that designation of "A MAN" apply to a series of pagan empires? Because Daniel described the Babylonian empire at the beginning of that series of empires this way in Daniel 7: 4. "The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as A MAN, and a MAN'S HEART was given to it." Daniel also described this continual series of pagan empires as Nebuchadnezzar's dream about the statue of a MAN'S figure in Daniel 2.
This 666 calculated number for the Sea Beast's existence is ancient history, and is not a threat to anyone today or in our future either.
