What is the difference between Zion and Sion?
None
Who is the daughter of Zion or Sion?
Or the daughter of Jerusalem?
The portion of people of Jerusalem preserved as a remnant.
Sure, but let's look at a little scripture.
In the NAS the word "
Sion," occurs only once.
Deuteronomy 4:47-49
They took possession of his land and the land of Og king of Bashan, the two kings of the Amorites, who were across the Jordan to the east, from Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, even as far as Mount Sion (that is, Hermon), with all the Arabah across the Jordan to the east, even as far as the sea of the Arabah, at the foot of the slopes of Pisgah.
On that occasion Sion is a mountain, one also known as Hermon. Mount Hermon is mentioned about a dozen times in the OT between Dt. 3 and Songs 4. If the "daughters of Sion" mentioned in the op is a reference to Matthew 21:5 then "Sion" is used in relatively or comparatively few translations. The Greek is "Sion" and the concordance shows that the KJV is correct using the "S" instead of "Z," at least as far as Greek goes. It's curious because in Hebrew, "
siyown" also begins with "s" but it's uniformly translated as Zion, even in the KJV (except for the aforementioned Dt. 4:48. So, it looks like Zion and Sion, geographically speaking are identical. Mount Ziosn/Sion is one of the seven mountains surrounding Jerusalem (
the city of seven mountains). Psalm 133
states,
Psalm 133:3
It is like the dew of Hermon Coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the LORD commanded the blessing—life forever.
The "
it" is a reference to brothers dwelling together in unity, but its comparison to dew of Hermon running down from Zion indicates the two sites are the same place.
As to the
meaning of "
daughters of Sion/Zion," there are a 70 verse in OT verses mentioning daughter(s) of Zion. Assuming the op is alluding to Matthew 21:5, that is a direct but abbreviated reference to Zechariah,
Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Matthew 21:5
Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.
Curiously, the larger Zechariah text does not contain very much about salvation.
Zechariah 9:1-17 (excerpted for the sake of space)
The burden of the word of the LORD is against the land of Hadrach, with Damascus as its resting place (for the eyes of men, especially of all the tribes of Israel, are toward the LORD), and Hamath also, which borders on it; Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise........... And I will remove their blood from their mouth and their detestable things from between their teeth. Then they also will be a remnant for our God, And be like a clan in Judah, And Ekron like a Jebusite. But I will camp around My house because of an army, because of him who passes by and returns; and no oppressor will pass over them anymore, for now I have seen with My eyes. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, humble, and mounted on a donkey, even on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the horse from Jerusalem; and the bow of war will be cut off. And He will speak peace to the nations; and His dominion will be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of My covenant with you, I have set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to the stronghold, O prisoners who have the hope; This very day I am declaring that I will restore double to you. For I will bend Judah as My bow, I will fill the bow with Ephraim. And I will stir up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece; and I will make you like a warrior's sword. Then the LORD will appear over them, And His arrow will go forth like lightning; and the Lord GOD will blow the trumpet and will march in the storm winds of the south. The LORD of hosts will defend them. And they will devour and trample on the sling stones; And they will drink and be boisterous as with wine; And they will be filled like a sacrificial basin, Drenched like the corners of the altar. And the LORD their God will save them in that day as the flock of His people; For they are as the stones of a crown, Sparkling in His land. For what comeliness and beauty will be theirs! Grain will make the young men flourish, and new wine the virgins.
Zechariah prophesied the king's entrance foreshadowed a lot of wrath and violence. A lot could be said here because Zechariah is directly referencing a host of other OT texts (such as
Ps. 146:7). Other verses reference a lot of judgment, too. The first mention in the Bible is Isaiah saying,
2 Kings 19:21
This is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: 'She has despised you and mocked you, the virgin daughter of Zion; She has shaken her head behind you, The daughter of Jerusalem!'
Isaiah 1:7-9
Your land is desolate, your cities are burned with fire, your fields—strangers are devouring them in your presence; it is desolation, as overthrown by strangers. The daughter of Zion is left like a shelter in a vineyard, like a watchman's hut in a cucumber field, like a besieged city. Unless the LORD of hosts had left us a few survivors, we would be like Sodom, we would be like Gomorrah.
Isaiah 37:21-23
Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent word to Hezekiah, saying, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Because you have prayed to Me about Sennacherib king of Assyria, this is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: "She has despised you and mocked you, the virgin daughter of Zion; She has shaken her head behind you, the daughter of Jerusalem! Whom have you reproached and blasphemed? And against whom have you raised your voice and haughtily lifted up your eyes? Against the Holy One of Israel!
Without going through the entire list of verses, the "daughter of Sion/Zion appears to be nothing more than the people of Jerusalem and, by extension those of Israel, but those of certain qualities (such as being virginal, shakes her head at the godless, etc.) and not all of everyone in the city.
