I think believers who know about how holy God is and how sinful man is believe the atonement was necessary.
Does Jesus Himself refer to the necessity of His death? I believe he does. even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matt 20:28.
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. Matt 26:28.
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29.

There could be no other reason for God to abase Himself and be made in the fashion of a man and to suffer on the cross. God the Father would not subject His own Son to such agonies if sin could have been remitted without satisfaction.

And to suppose that all this was appointed by the Father to confirm Christ's testimony as a teacher or an example, should be shocking to reason, that could have been affected by a martyr's death. For those who think it was meant to impress humans with a conviction of God's love, is no better. If the death of Christ was not necessary it would be unacceptable to divine goodness and wisdom.

God appointed sacrifices to give the Jews a vivid picture of the guilt of sin and of the rectitude and holiness of God. I think the whole OT was to bring into prominence the necessity of an atonement and to sharpen the conviction that sin required a higher sacrifice. If a Jew neglected the sacrifices of atonement he became subject to the curse of the law. But if he brought a sacrifice, he was purged and had access to God.
Of course, all the sacrifices were a type and shadow of the Lamb of God.

Leviticus 16 is about the Day of Atonement. It's very difficult to do-away with the Atonement...

Christ's fulfillment of the scriptures.

Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied;
by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant,
make many to be accounted righteous,
and he shall bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many,[b]
and he shall divide the spoil with the strong,[c]
because he poured out his soul to death
and was numbered with the transgressors;
yet he bore the sin of many,
and makes intercession for the transgressors.
Isaiah 53:11-12.

“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd,
against the man who stands next to me,”
declares the Lord of hosts.
“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;
I will turn my hand against the little ones.
Zech 13:7.

27 And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’ Mark 14:27.

Amen!

Agreed.

Christ's death on the cross was to accoplish all that was necessary to free us from sin and death and to bring us into God's Kingdom. Everything written in the OT was fulfilled in His death: substitution, recapitulation, ransom, redemption, blood sacrifice, victory over the forces of darkness, the nex exodus and the new covenant and probably much more than I could write here.
