Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1).

In this verse believers are commanded to “test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” This same command is echoed in other parts of Scripture as well. For example, in 1 Thessalonians 5:20-21 we find Paul exhorting the Christians to not “despise prophecies, but test everything; hold fast what is good.”

These two passages are just a few of the many that warn Christians to test the message that people or spirits proclaim. This is true in all situations but most importantly when a person or spirit is claiming to speak for God. Christians are to be discerning hearers and readers of all messages. The reason for the admonition to “test the spirits” or “test all things” is that there are “many false prophets” or “wolves in sheep’s clothing” that try to lead Christians astray. Sadly, there are many people who claim to speak for God who are presenting a false gospel that is powerless to save. Such errant teaching leaves people with a false hope of salvation and, in a way, inoculates them from the true message. People who are deceived into thinking everything is fine will be more resistant to the truth.

Second Corinthians 11:13-15 warns us that “such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.” So the reason for testing the spirits, for testing all religious teaching, is to see if it is truly from God or if it is a lie from Satan and his servants.

The test is to compare what is being taught with the clear teaching of the Bible. The Bible alone is the Word of God; it alone is inspired and inerrant. Therefore, the way to test the spirits is to see if what is being taught is in line with the clear teaching of Scripture. In Acts 17:10-11 the Berean Jews were commended because, after they heard the teachings of Paul and Silas, they “examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” The Bereans were called “noble” for doing so.

Testing the spirits means that one must know how to “examine the Scriptures.” Rather than accept every teaching, discerning Christians diligently study the Scriptures. Then they know what the Bible says and therefore can “test all things and hold fast to what is true.” In order to do this, a Christian must “be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). The Word of God is to be “a lamp” and “a light” to our path (Psalm 119:105). We must let its light shine on the teachings and doctrines of the day; the Bible alone is the standard by which all truth must be judged.Got ?

It takes lots of practice. It is about a thorough knowledge of the Word, and about true discernment of a 'spirit' in action. One that I encounter a lot is the 'spirit' of futurist eschatology. I can't really match it with the NT, and it usually is unaware that it practices '2 peoples--2 programs' which the NT does not. So there are things that seriously crash.

Another is that of naturalistic evolution. Especially its attempts to 'merge' with Genesis. I don't get how people miss the utterly miraculous of both the event of creation and even the ongoing, but naturalism/gradualism sucks it out from the thing which is fraught with it.

But HOW does one test the spirit?
And define spirit.

What are key forces driving societies or the world?

Equality.

What does the Bible say? And what does logic say?

We can see that the Tower of Babel was really about equality. People were being transformed from stones (everybody unequal) into bricks (everybody equal.) It was done by force. Had this played out then war would have probably resulted. Also, God forbid the Israelis to build personal altars out of brick.

Logically, we can see with our own eyes that nobody is equal. We aren't even equal to ourselves on different days.

The next spirit is Islam. It is an Abrahamic religion. If you believe in equality, then you most likely believe that Allah is also the God of Christians. When the Islamic Jesus comes, as foretold in Islamic prophecy, and asks you to take the mark of Allah in Arabic, why wouldn't you? Of course, it looks a lot like 666 in Greek numbers but who knows that?

Logically, we can eventually deduce that Islam is the religion of angels. And by angels I mean demons.

According to 1 John 4:4, & 2 Corinthians 13:5 Jesus Christ is in you and so when they preach the Spirit of Christ as being felt outside of you in the worship place or any place, or feeling a spirit coming over you as if filling you ( thief breaking in ) as standing apart from the call of the gospel from when you were saved when you had first believed, that is the spirt of the antichrist; 1 John 4:3 & 2 Thessalonians 2:13-15

Such a phenomenon can seduce and inspire wayward believers into seeking that phenomenon again by invoking the "Holy Spirit" to come and to "visit" them again by a sign or by a wonder which is in hypocrisy when He is in them since salvation. 1 Timothy 4:1-2 & 2 Corinthians 11:1-4

The indwelling Holy Spirit will always keep our eyes on the son of God, the Lord Jesus Christ because He is the Bridegroom.

The visiting spirits of the antichrist would take our eyes off of the Son ( hence instead of Christ ) to seeking that presence or that phenomenon.

Pray to the Lord Jesus Christ in normal language to deliver you or to keep you from the thieves in these latter days that would cause believers to be out in the market place seeking to be filled with oil and thus be in iniquity for why He does not know them as they get left behind.

Matthew 25:1-13 KJV Do note that the five foolish virgins of the ten virgins ARE the kingdom of Heaven, but they missed out on the Marriage Supper at the pre great tribulation rapture event. The Lord will get those lost sheep as they will hear His voice literally as their King of kings after the great tribulation as they will no longer follow that stranger's voice, tongues for private use nor chase after seducing spirits any more. They will see & serve their King of kings on earth and no longer seek the glory of any movement of the spirits of the antichrist, but the glory of their King.

John 10:1Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. 4 And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. 5 And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.

16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

Now what is the basis upon which the Holy Spirit in you uses towards the testing of the spirit of someone?

Now what is the basis upon which the Holy Spirit in you uses towards the testing of the spirit of someone?
If a believer testify to feeling the "Holy Spirit" outside of him in the worship place or feeling the "Holy Spirit: coming into him again as not by the calling of the gospel when he had first believed, then that is not the real Holy Spirit but the spirit of the antichrist.

That is why believers are warned not to believe every spirit, but test them by knowing He is in us as opposed to those spirits that "visit" in the world with signs and lying wonders like, the holy laughter movement, Pensacola Outpouring, Toronto's Blessings, Ernest Angeley's healing Crusade, Welsh Revival of 1904-05 & Azusa Street Revival where they had placed the emphasis on the baptism with the Holy Ghost with evidence of tongues as they also had "being drunk in the spirit" phenomenon also in 1906-09 and etc.

These events are happening more so now in these latter days as they do not announce them when guest speakers come into churches preaching "an encounter with Jesus" and "experience the tenderness of Jesus" rather than preaching the gospel. This one guest speaker at my brother's church says you do not even have to come to Jesus so as to inspire sinners brought to these healing events to come forward looking for that phenomenon for a healing. Indeed, my brother's pastor added to that guest's call for healing, "Those who have a hunger for more of God, ... let the Spirit fill you" so as to invite Christians that were brought to this healing service for a healing as well by that "visiting phenomenon".

The History of Tongues: Pagan Practices

Apostasy since "healings" can occur in these pagan practices as well. That is why Jesus warned believers to not point seekers nor believers to a spirit, but to the Son of God.

Matthew 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: 14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

4 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1 Jn 4.

The instruction concerns determining whether someone is "of God."
And there is much evidence that Christians use to determine that fact not only whether someone denies Christ came in the flesh.
A child of truth will know the Word of Truth through the Spirit of Truth that teaches him or her about the God is Truth.
It is not only one thing by which we carry out the instruction in 1 John 4:1.
When someone says a wrong thing about God it is still a wrong thing.
Thus, we must all see the same Jesus, we must all say the same thing as God.
To do otherwise is to oppose Him.
And in this we see the spirit of truth and error.

The testing of the spirits from 1 and 2 John has to do with the teaching concerning Christ coming in the flesh .
Some Bible version would mistranslate that message but no. It is inconsistent with verses 3 & 4 in testing the spirits.

1 John 4:1Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. 5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them. 6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

1 John 4:2 is the same thing as Paul saying this below;

2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?

By reading 1 John 4:3-4 is how you can know with His help; that is rightly dividing the word of truth when testing the spirits.

Azusa street Revival has placed an emphasis on the baptism with the Holy Ghost with evidence of tongues for why that tongue is just gibberish nonsense as found in the occult per Isaiah 8:19 and Roman idolatry.

The History of Tongues: Pagan Practices

That is why 1 John 4:5-6 is written as they are to test the tongues as God's gift of tongues is a foreign language of men to speak unto the people for why it can never be for private use as assumed because it does not come with interpretation as it is gibberish nonsense & not a language of men.

So testing the spirits and the tongues they bring is actually testing the spirits themselves and not just the false prophets.

Feeling a spirit in the worship place as outside of you or feeling it come over you, it does not matter if the focus was on the Holy Spirit, that was NOT the holy Spirit.

Testing the spirits has to do with the teaching of the spirit of antichrist which I spelled out in that OP

The number one test to distinguish truth for error and the Spirit of God from that of the spirit of antichrist is the confession of our divine Lord Jesus Christ. Every spirit that confesses Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. There is one thing the spirit of antichrist will deny and that is they will deny He is God in the flesh- that He is fully God and fully man. They will deny God in human flesh. They will always deny the Incarnation which was permanent. When a person affirms that Jesus Christ is God in flesh that equates to divine truth. Every spirit that confesses meaning to continually confess or agrees with saying the same thing as John declares in his writings is from God. This is the person who is taught by the Spirit of God according to John. The first test that you want to have for any teacher is their Christology, check out what they say about Christ. This becomes a litmus test that is very easy to spot among the false teachers. If you have somebody who denies the deity of Christ you have a clear indication they are of the spirit of antichrist.

If we go back to the beginning of 1 John, we read that which we he beheld, and actually touched concerning the Word of life. That is a term expressing the very deity of Christ. Christ emanates from God as His living Word. He was with the Father in the beginning in 1:2. Jesus was One with the Father sharing the same essence with the Father in heaven with Him before the foundation of the world. John says He was manifested to us. John's language then starts out with the fact that Jesus Christ emanates from God as the very living Word of God. Jesus is the living Word of God,the One John says that was from the beginning that we heard, we saw and we touched. Jesus the Word of life was the eternal One who was with the Father prior to His Incarnation and was then manifested to us in the flesh that we could see and hear and touch according to John. Therefore, we can clearly see Jesus is the very Word of God Incarnate. He is the eternal life who became flesh. The Word who was with God, the Word who was God, was the One who John says was manifested to us. This is how we can tell the spirit of truth from the spirit of antichrist. Can you confess Jesus is God Incarnate?

1 John 4:2
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God;

2 John 7
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.

Erchomenon the present participle in 2 John 7

Alford- the present tense is timeless(pg 274 RNTC on 2 John)

Brooke- the Incarnation is not only an event in history, it is an abiding truth(pg 274 RNTC on 2 John)

Stott- the two natures manhood and Godhood were united already at His birth, never to be divided. In 1 John 4:2 and here in 2 John 7 emphasizes this permanent union of the natures in the One Person ( TNTC pages 209-210) He who denies the Incarnation is not just a deceiver and an antichrist but “the deceiver and the antichrist”. There is in this heresy a double affront: it opposes Christ and deceives men.(stott TNCT page 210)

Marshall- the use of the present and perfect tenses becomes significant if the point is that Jesus Christ had come and still existed “in flesh”. For him(John) it was axiomatic that there had been a true Incarnation, that the word became flesh and remained flesh. It is a point that receives much stress in 1 John 2:18-28;4:1-6;5:5-8. (NICNT pages 70-71)

Smalley- the present tense emphasizes the permanent union of the human and Divine natures in Jesus. Gods self disclosure in Jesus took place at a particular moment in history , but it has continuing effects in the present and into the future(Word Biblical Commentary page 317)

Nicoll- the continuous manifestation of the Incarnate Christ(Expositors Greek Testament Volume 5 page 202)
Akin- Much has been made of the fact that John uses the present tense in this Christological confession. Literally the verse reads, “Jesus Christ coming in flesh.” “Coming” is a present active participle. This stands out in remarkable contrast to the affirmation of 1 John 4:2, where the text states that “Jesus Christ has [emphasis mine] come in the flesh.” There the perfect active participle is used. The key, it seems, is to discover what John is affirming. Here in 2 John the emphasis falls on the abiding reality of the incarnation. First John 4:2 teaches that the Christ, the Father’s Son (v. 3), has come in the flesh. Second John affirms that the wedding of deity and humanity has an abiding reality (cf. 1 Tim 2:5). The ontological and essential nature of the incarnation that would receive eloquent expression one thousand years later in the writing of St. Anselm (1033–1109) in his classic Cur Deus Homo is already present in seed form in the tiny and neglected letter of 2 John.

Lenski- In 1 John 4:2 we have ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα, the perfect participle, “as having come in flesh” (incarnate, John 1:14); here we have ἐρχόμενον ἐν σαρκί, “as coming in flesh,” although the participle is present in form it is really timeless.of Christ as "still being manifested." See the note at 1 John 3:5. In 1 John 4:2 we have the manifestation treated as a past fact by the perfect tense, ‎eleeluthota ‎"has come
Robertson- That Jesus Christ cometh in the flesh Ieesoun ‎‎Christon ‎‎erchomenon ‎‎en ‎‎sarki‎. "Jesus Christ coming in the flesh." Present middle participle of ‎erchomai treating the Incarnation as a continuing fact which the Docetic Gnostics flatly denied. In 1 John 4:2 we have ‎eleeluthota ‎(perfect active participle) in this same construction with ‎homologeoo‎, because there the reference is to the definite historical fact of the Incarnation.

Vincent- Is come erchomenon‎. Wrong. The verb is in

I understand that.
I am adding that a person denying Christ came in the flesh is not the only information by which to test the spirit of someone to determine whether they are of God as per 1 John 4:1.
Before we call anyone "brethren/brother" we must first make sure we have the same Father.

The thing that disturbed me about your video was the statement of the 'adversary' taking what's true and making a counterfeit.
Let's not underestimate the evil of men to take what's counterfeit and passing it off as true.
Laughing, crying, slain, falling backward, etc., are all true manifestations of the Holy Spirit.
What this video shows is an attempt to make the true into a counterfeit.
And THAT is the danger.

Dear brother,

Those signs and wonders was in the world before Pentecost came and so it is God that will not copycat those things that is of the devil.

Dear brother,

I didn't say they were signs and wonders. I said they were manifestations of the Holy Spirit in His people.
Everything God has done man copies. Or at least tries to copy if it's in their power.
So, for me, the video is disturbing because these manifestations of the Holy Spirit's Presence in His people is being passed off as counterfeit by someone seemingly a Christian.
When the Holy Spirit arrives and manifests His Presence those being ministered to KNOW it is God.
But those witnessing can only guess. Just like Simon Magus. He SAW but wasn't among them being touched by God.
One more thing...
No flesh shall glory in His Presence.
So, be careful when so-called Christians attempt to call good evil.
Especially when they call evil good.
