Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Phil 2:12-13.

What is the meaning of working out your salvation with fear and trembling? And it is God who works in you both, to “will and to do?”

Does Proverbs 16:9 harmonize and help interpret the meaning or is it a total different subject?

Proverbs 16:9
The heart of man plans his way,
but the LORD establishes his steps.

{edit} this question was inspired by a brother in Christ (cc shorts) from another forum. I think it was an awesome subject.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

Acts 5:11
Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

Hebrews 10
If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”[d] and again, “The Lord will judge his people.”[e] 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

2 Cor 5
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. 11 Since, then, we know what it is to fear the Lord, we try to persuade others. What we are is plain to God, and I hope it is also plain to your conscience.

Sorry brother but I’m not sure how it relates? I’m probably thinking slow today. 🙂

We know no one is saved by works, so I think this may be saying that we need to keep on studying—go digging for God’s truths in the Bible (with much prayer for the leading of the Holy Spirit). We need to desire (will) His Truth and then go after it (do it). God Himself will give us that will and the commitment to do it for His own pleasure. ….and the Truth will set us free.

God is the First Cause of all things. He is almighty and our destiny is completely controlled by him. Proverbs 16:9 attests to God's total control of our destiny.
Proverbs 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s mind, But it is the Lord’s purpose for him that will stand (be carried out).
Proverbs 20:24 A man’s steps are directed by the LORD. How then can anyone understand his own way?
Daniel 5:23b But you have not glorified the God who has in his control your very breath and all your ways!

Compatibilism or Hard Determinism .... knowing of CCShort to some degree, I would think the later.

This is not about CC, he just asked a similar question

Thanks for your thoughts on this. 🙂

The appropriate amount of gravity and seriousness in the whole matter. God is not a Santa Claus in the sky.

And yet we approach him with trust and confidence, security and intimacy.
