I think we all agree that Jesus Christ is the rock of salvation and that this is another subject different than the rock upon which Christ builds His church. (No reference to the Catholic Church)

Is the rock upon which Christ builds His church the confession of Peter or the person of Peter?

Thanks

The Rock is Christ. Do a word study of all scripture and see the Rock.

The context reveals that people were divided as to who Christ was. No different than today.
Who was he? Who is he?
Peter’s confession ought to settle the issue, but it has not.
Jesus is the son of the living God. If you know that, he knows you.
Do you believe it?
No, they don’t.
They say he is God.
No, Jesus has a God. His God is his Father.
He is the son of the living God.
Believe it or not.
The living God is his God and Father.

Hi Don

Another alternative.

Chery picking does not give the context in the end of the matter . The whole discourse does give us a conclusion to the whole matter

I would offer

Ecclesiastes 7:8 Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Slowing down working against remembering his promise, if he has began the good teaching work in you he will continual till one take their last breath. Hopefully giving us slower learners a goal of hope .

Knowledge can puff up. God's labor of love comes along side yoked with giving rest.

Philippians 1King James Version1 Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons: Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy ,For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

I would think the subject matter is. What did Peter our brother in the Lord do with the keys? Lock or unlock?

Mather 16:22;23 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, (sola scriptura) but those that be of men.

Peter was forgiven of his blasphemy against the son of man, flesh and blood Jesus .That 33year window of opportunity departed when the Son of Man Jesus did. Today no forgiveness

What do you think the object lesson of chapter 16 was?

The Rock is Christ and the church is built upon Peters's confession.

Ok

Christ build the church upon Himself?

Why do He need apostles?
Eph 2:20

How can the church be on earth if Christ ascended to heaven?

Thks

The church is not a building, it's Christians, the body of Christ.

If Peter was given the keys, they were snatched away by Paul in Gal 2...

Galatians 2:11-12,14 NKJV
Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; [12] for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. [14] But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, "If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews?

No keys in this passage

The apostles can be wrong in matters of discipline and correct each other

Was Peter declared blessed simply cos he received revelation?
JTB received revelation in Lk 3:2 and not declared blessed

So only a pope can correct another pope?

So only a pope can correct another pope?
No an apostle can correct any apostles on a matter of discipline

Only Christ is judge and can judge a popes personal sin

Christ does appoint the apostles judge over israel

Did Paul correct Peter on a matter of faith or morals?

Gal 2:11 When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. 12 For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

14 When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish customs?

My goof, I thought Peter was the first Pope. Guess I was wrong.

Matt 16:17-19
Why is Peter even mentioned?
Why does Jesus change His name?
Why does Jesus say Peter is blessed?
Why does Jesus give Peter the keys of the kingdom (jurisdictional authority)
Why does Jesus give Peter power to bind and loose?
Why does scripture say God chose Peter? Acts 15:7
What does Peter standing up signify? Acts 1:15 & 15:7

Peter’s person blessed not a confession of faith!
Peter’s person received the keys not a confession of faith!

God always establishes peace and order in his kingdom by obedience to the fathers in hierarchical authority!

Do Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, in acts 5 believe it is a confession of faith that has authority or peter?
