We do this by comparing everything against the Word of God written, making sure we are understanding the issues carefully.
The problem we face is that prophecy is not a matter of private interpretation--and the Bible written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is prophecy--therefore when we want to know the truth of any matter, should there be a matter of question, we take it to the Church, and to Scripture.
For hundreds of years the Church has been under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit interpreting the Scriptures, explaining the Word with clarity in our own languages.
When I was first being drawn to Christ I was given a deep and burning need to understand why the Christians thought Jesus has to die in order to forgive the sins of men.
God led me to a Christian man who knew Scripture and Islam enough to have a real discussion with me, and of course everything I asked of him I also asked of the sheikh (Islamic "holy" man)
The spirit world is real, and spirits do attack Christians, not just non-Christians.
So when Christians have a question, or a spirit telling them this thing or that, or we feel a conviction of this thing or that, we check it against Scriptures, and the Church's Holy Spirit led interpretation of those Scriptures.
For a long time after leaving Islam, "religion" terrified me. I didn’t trust people. I found a place to hide—comfortably, quietly—but it wasn’t the place I was reborn for. It wasn’t where I belonged. Over time, God has been teaching me to trust His people—to love His Church, because she is the Bride of Christ. And now I do.
Just yesterday at the meeting, we shared communion. A couple of the elders stood and gave their testimonies—how they came to know Christ. It was beautiful to be with God’s people, gathered as one body in worship and remembrance. We’re not perfect. But we are His.
Scripture is the final word. It judges our thoughts and discerns the heart (cf.
Hebrews 4:12). It corrects, exhorts, comforts, and instructs us in righteousness (cf.
2 Timothy 3:16). It tells us how to live as children of the Living God, and it cannot be overthrown—not by sheikhs, not by false prophets, not by the world.
It is the Living Word in written form. And when we speak it, we do not breathe out our own birth story, but the crucified and risen Christ—because He is our life.
And that breath, that Spirit filled breath breathing Christ crucified is what changes lives
