The New Jerusalem is God’s city in his Kingdom in heaven, built for saints who love Him and keep His commandments. The New Jerusalem will be the home of the saints taken up at the Second Coming at the resurrection, where they will reign with Christ in heaven during the millennium and, afterward, on the new earth for eternity. Satan is shut up in the 'bottomless pit' during this time and cannot deceive till after the thousand years of the millennium.

Revelation 20:3-6
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.4 And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years. 5 But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection. 6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

So this brings into question, when will the new heaven and new earth be created? We see the New Jerusalem that God promised coming down to the recreated earth where it replaces the original Jerusalem as promised to those who overcome.

Revelation 21:2
And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

Revelation 3:12
Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name.

So we see that the earth and the heavens above it will be recreated, and we not even remember or it come to mind.

Isaiah 65:17
For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

Isaiah 66:22
For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before me, saith the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain.

2 Peter 3:13
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.

Revelation 21:1
And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

So the New Jerusalem will be in a reconstituted earth with the heavens above also, so what happens to the wicked, scripture is clear.

Revelation 2:11
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death

Revelation 20:6
Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Revelation 20:14
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Revelation 21:8
But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Here is where the saints will reign with Christ, with no more tears, or remembrance of the old earth and the former things that happened, in the New Jerusalem 'wherein dwelleth righteousness', for eternity. Where we shall see flowing from the throne of God, the pure river of life, with the tree of life, and “they shall see His face”.

Revelation 22:1-4
1 And he shewed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.
2 In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.
3 And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
4 And they shall see his face; and his name shall be in their foreheads.

When does the New Jerusalem come down to earth?

If the last few chapters of Revelation are taken chronologically then the new city of peace comes down long after the 1000 years has come and gone, and only after satan, death, and all the Christ-deniers are tossed in the fiery lake so deadly even death is destroyed.

Therefore, it's not something with which we need to concern ourselves at the expense of all else we're called to accomplish before that happens.

Ephesians 2:10
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

Those who do not perform the good works for which we have been created in Christ are not fulfilling the purpose for which we have been saved. I question whether waiting is a good work or a good non-work ;).

After the “new heaven and Earth” …

Revelation 21:1-2 [NLT]
  • 1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone.
  • 2 And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

Hobie, I truly have no time to address this in detail, and since you very seldom enter into a serious dialogue with others, I will forebear doing so at the moment, but will only say this.

The New Jerusalem is God's city that HE WILL DWELL in for all eternity! The New Jerusalem is the church in her glorified state.

Hobie, the New Jerusalem is the BRIDE OF CHRIST~
a bride adorned for her husband
The New Jerusalem is the TABERNACLE OF GOD that he has prepared for himself!
Behold, the tabernacle of God
The following scriptures in Revelation 21 describes her eternal beauty, glory, in highly symbolic language.

Revealtion 21:9-27~"And there came unto me one of the seven angels which had the seven vials full of the seven last plagues, and talked with me, saying, Come hither, I will shew thee the bride, the Lamb's wife.
And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, Having the glory of God: and her light was like unto a stone most precious, even like a jasper stone, clear as crystal; And had a wall great and high, and had twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels, and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: On the east three gates; on the north three gates; on the south three gates; and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. And he that talked with me had a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length is as large as the breadth: and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs. The length and the breadth and the height of it are equal. And he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of the angel. And the building of the wall of it was of jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass. And the foundations of the wall of the city were garnished with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, a chalcedony; the fourth, an emerald; The fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, a topaz; the tenth, a chrysoprasus; the eleventh, a jacinth; the twelfth, an amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; every several gate was of one pearl: and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent glass. And I saw no temple therein: for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are the temple of it. And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof. And the nations of them which are saved shall walk in the light of it: and the kings of the earth do bring their glory and honour into it. And the gates of it shall not be shut at all by day: for there shall be no night there. And they shall bring the glory and honour of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life."

The New Jerusalem being the bride of Christ (Rev 21:2, 9), the church (Rev 21:9-14), the body of Christ (Eph 5:30-32) and the one people of God, coming down at the new heaven and new earth, the home of righteousness (2 Pe 3:13).

Well, the premillennialist need to rethink their whole system of eschatology~the SDA founded about the time that this doctrine begin to pick up steam, they just jump aboard and swallowed it ........."hook, line, and sinker".

The New Jerusalem being the bride of Christ (Rev 21:2, 9), the church (Rev 21:9-14), the body of Christ (Eph 5:30-32) and the one people of God, coming down at the new heaven and new earth, the home of righteousness (2 Pe 3:13).
Amen, Eleanor.

I don't think the New Jerusalem is literal. Given the dimensions given in the Bible, if it were to land on earth, the collision would destroy the planet.

It's not going to collide with this earth Rev. 21:1 says it will come to the new earth. I believe God is well equipped tom prevent a cosmic catastrophe.

Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.

2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

There is a clue in the riddle as to what it means/represents, if you can find it.

Hint: the church is the bride of the Christ, the Lamb.

I do not believe we are the New Jerusalem but we will enter into it.

Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb's book of life.

It has dimensions, gates, walls, foundation, precious stones, street, it is a "great city".

The text states that the city it is the bride of the lamb (Rev 21:9-10). Do you disagree?

Keeping in mind that the church is the spouse of Christ, the Lamb, in the two-in-one enfleshment of the marital union (Eph 5:30-32).

It is the OT saints who will go into the city for that is what was promised to them.

`But now they desire a better, that is a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.` (Heb. 11: 16)

The city, the NJ will come down out of heaven (third heaven) (in the NHNE) from God, and be a light over the earth. Those on the earth will walk in its light.

`And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honour into it.` (Rev. 21: 24)

Note: the Body of Christ`s inheritance is higher up, on the Lord`s own throne in the third heaven.

Obviously God is able to do anything. But it seems to me that He mostly prefers to act through the agency of men and nature, rather than subverting His own natural laws.

Also, even if such a thing hovered in orbit, it would cause catastrophic planetary tidal waves. Another great flood.

We need to remember that it came from heaven so it is not of the earth.

Your Bible is full of examples of natural law being “subverted “.

We need to remember that it came from heaven so it is not of the earth.
What we need to do is remember context~that's what drives our understanding of what is being spoken. Before I start addressing Revelation 21,22~We must remember.................

Interpretations must agree with their context.

We must remember this law: A text used out of context is a pretext. We cannot violate it; we must learn to spot it.
  1. A text is a word, clause, verse, paragraph, chapter, or book you are seeking to interpret.
  2. Context is the surrounding information, which shows the author’s meaning by the text.
  3. Out of context is using words and their sound contrary to the surrounding information.
  4. A pretext is a false and incorrect impression designed to hide or disguise the real intent.
  5. Using a verse contrary to its context gives a misleading and deceitful sound of words to teach something the author did not intend and/or is not true. We must reject this abuse of words!
  6. You have had your words used out of context before, and you hated the corruption of your intent and meaning. We must make sure we never do it with the precious Word of God.
  7. This rule applies to all writings and conversations of every sort, and so context is well understood by most people. Contracts, court records, novels, promises, and poetry are all understood in context, or surrounding information, to truly understand their meaning.
  8. Even single words are meaningless without a context, which is why we asked our teacher to use them in a sentence before we would try to spell them in a spelling bee!
  9. Even if you use a verse to teach a true point, make sure we still honor its context. For using the wrong verse to teach the right point is the first subtle step to heresy. Mark it! What is context? Let us make sure we understand exactly what we mean by context
  10. Context. The whole structure of a connected passage regarded in its bearing upon any of the parts which constitute it; the parts which immediately precede or follow any particular passage or ‘text’ and determine its meaning. [OED]
  11. Context is the surrounding information that tells us what an author means by individual words, sentences, or paragraphs within a passage. Without grasping the author’s viewpoint and intent, we will face many words and turns of phrase that we will not properly understand. By missing the author’s perspective, we will be confused and misinterpret particular and individual words, sentences, and paragraphs of the work.
  12. Context means the weaving together of words and sentences. We must determine the sense of Scripture and not just its sound. We do this by carefully considering the connection that each word, sentence, and section have to those around it. Every word in the Bible is part of a verse, every verse part of a paragraph, every paragraph part of a chapter, every chapter part of a book, and every book is part of the whole Bible. How in the world can we presume to isolate single words and sentences?
  13. Again, remember when your own words have been used out of context. A single word, sentence, paragraph, speech, or document was singled out and given a meaning that did not agree with all the words, expressions, tones, circumstances, audience, acts, or facts surrounding it. You were rightly offended, and so is the Lord when we abuse His word!
  14. Now, we shall return later and prove that Revelation 21,22 is the church in her final, eternal glorified state, having the glory of God described to us by using highly symbolic language!

It has dimensions, gates, walls, foundation, precious stones, street, it is a "great city".
Is not ZIon a great city made up of God's elect? There are only two cities in the scriptures of any biblical significance~one is Mystery Babylon the city built by the devil himself; the other Mount Zion, God's holy city made of of his elect.

Mystery Babylon is this world's system that is antichrist in every imaginable way one can think of.

Mount Zion is the city of the Great God! She is also called the New Jerusalem.

4And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

5And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.

6And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
