The pope claims an authority that was never claimed by Peter.
The RCC claims that Peter was the first pope in Rome and that all other popes from that time are successors to Peter.
I would think the best way to test the legitimacy of that statement would be from Peter himself. Can anyone recall where Peter claimed to be a pope or have any authority over the other apostles?
Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 1 Peter 1:1.
Hmmm, so far, an apostle just like those others. No pope, no authority over the others.
1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
3 Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock. Peter 1:5
hmmm, nope, nothing.
Peter just refers to himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ, an elder, and not a pope. He does not claim himself the highest place in the church, he claims no ecclesiastic superiority. He puts himself and keeps himself on the same level as those he exhorts.
