Praying for God

Is there any practical reason to pray to God for God?

I see. I thought it meant praying for God in the same way we might pray for unsaved relatives or persecuted Christians. You took it to mean praying for God to do something for you (abide with you) or for somebody else. But isn't that true of all prayer?
Job 1:21
It is merely an affirmation of Job 1:21 The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

"Change and decay in all around I see.
O thou who changest not, abide with me"

Hmmm, surprised me. O.K., what is the "practical purpose of asking" God to do something for God?

"Practical purpose" refers to the real-world application or usefulness of something, emphasizing its tangible benefits and functionality rather than theoretical or abstract ideas. It highlights the ability of something to be used effectively in everyday situations or for specific tasks
I think it is very practical for me to enjoy thoughts of God being delighted with something. One thing it has done for me is to take my mind from concerns of whether or not I am "going to make it to Heaven", to confidence that he will do whatever he pleases and that THAT is worth all of creation.

Further, it might be worth mentioning such situations as where Moses "stood in the gap" to keep God from destroying the Children of Israel. Funny how God 'would have' done so, but for Moses, whom God raised up for that very purpose (among other purposes)!

Agreed, we benefit ourselves by praying. I was thinking of praying to God FOR God, not for ourselves. I was looking for an example of praying for the benefit God. You can pray for something for God, but what practical purpose does that achieve given God is PERFECT already and does not change so what good is praying for something "for God" going to do?

If there is anything God has to gain by our admiration, it is his praise. Though honestly, that is only fitting, not gain. But he apparently wants it, or likes it, or something. I don't know if that isn't more for our benefit than his, but it is altogether wrapped up in his love for us.

The Triune nature of God needs nothing from outside this closed system, even praise and glorification is revealed within this closed system of God's nature being triune.

However, while everything exists that is good within this closed system, there's nothing wrong with enlarging the system with another life form, in fact, it can be called "good", even though it adds nothing that was missing; it's still good to enlarge the tent.

Well, by way of example ... one prays to God for the health of family or to find a job. You're asking God for something for yourself and/or others.

One would have to answer YES to the poll question to have an idea of what practical thing they would pray for God. I suppose, if you were a 'free will' person where free will is defined as a person self determining to believing salvificly you might pray the God see to it that people hear the gospel sometime in their life to give them a chance to be saved.

Aside: I just had a thought the other day that I pray for people I love and it occurred that I never did so for God. Upon further contemplation I came to the conclusion that one could pray to God to give something to God but there was no practical reason for doing so.
