Jonah spoke of his near-death experience in 2:
Jesus used this event as a type for his own death experience. He said in Matthew 12:
Jonah used the term Sheol metaphorically. He did not actually die.2 “I called out to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice.
Jesus used this event as a type for his own death experience. He said in Matthew 12:
There are several parts to this typology:40 "For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth".
- Jonah didn't die and go to Sheol, but Jesus did die and spend time in the heart of the earth, or Hades.
- Both spent three days.
- Jonah prayed to the LORD for his deliverance (Jonah 2:7) in the belly of the fish. Jesus preached to the dead.
- God delivered Jonah and saved him from death. Jesus conquered death through his resurrection, providing deliverance and salvation for humanity.
