Do you have a spiritual gift?

I don't have any gifts at all. I understand I am probably supposed to have at least one, but I'm pretty sure I have none!

It just takes time and experiences Dave. Hopefully you have a mentor. A mentor will see features about your spiritual 'output.' Even the fact that you wrote a line here.

Maybe instead of looking at I Cor 12's list, have a look at Rom 12s, because the categories are slightly different.

Go with a mentor and put yourself deliberately into an evangelistic attempt. Your mentor will have suggestions for you afterward, as to the gift, maybe about how evangelism was done.

If you are a born again believer you have at-least one gift, you might now be aware of what that is specifically. If you are involved in small groups, home groups, bible studies, church fellowship etc...... someone will notice your "spiritual gift" and how it is being used to build others up in the faith. Just as the body has different members, different functions and we are all part of that body, so to do each have various gifts that are to be used for that body to build it up.

Have you ever seen the Q/A assessment to determine what spiritual gifts you might have ?

What is a mentor? An elder? I don't attend any church at the moment. Got lots of issues in my personal life.

I think if I do have a gift it is probably discernment. I came out of a cult previously.

Presumably such a person would have that gift over the internet too, right?

OK, so there's a start. Yes you will need to be in a group to see anything like Rom 12 is referring to. You could of course succeed in an evangelistic effort regardless.

I'm a coward and a loser and I have no friends. I have a severe mental illness. I'm not a salesperson.

I thought such gifts were supernatural.
They are in the sense because they come from God who is Supernatural. The body of believer you fellowship with will see and recognize/affirm a spiritual gift. Most of the time they are being used without you even thinking about it. For example my wife has the gifts of helps, hospitality and encouragement. She just uses those gifts whenever she sees an opportunity and never thinks twice about it. She always thinks of others more than she does herself and goes out of her way to help others. She is a role model to me on how Christ would treat others.

OK, but this sounds like a charismatic thing to me. And people have natural talents, such as you speak of of your wife. I don't see how talents are supernatural.

For example a school teacher or college professor in the secular world who teaches students many times does not have the spiritual gift of teaching in the church- that comes from God and they are different.

That's just a big, "well, perhaps" for me, I'm afraid.

Since 1 Corinthians was written before the book of Romans then the gifts in Romans 12 were and are still in use.

Romans 12
For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. 4 For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

Well, the point of ceasing is at the completion of the canon.. so that is beyond the book of Romans.

A further evidence that you can see is that the mention of the gifts gets less and less as you move chronologically through scripture.

In saying this though, I'm not 100 percent sure on ministry gifts ceasing. Gifts of prophecy, tongues and knowledge, sure.. it the others.. I'd need to look again more deeply.

My impression is that what led to tongues, prophecy and knowledge to cease, was the same for the other gifts.

But I would like to study the other gifts more closely.

That’s just it as long as the body of Christ exists in this world so do the gifts that edify and build up that body . Those gifts are still at work in the body of Christ. The debate is if the sign gifts are still on operation or not .

My eyes were severely damaged about 7 years ago had I not gone to this eye specialist when I did he said we would have not been able to save my eyes

We have been trying to heal them ever since just doing cleaning is nearly impossible for me now.
