1859 AND THE RESURRECTION



Resurrection Week 2025



1859 was a highly consequential year. We may recognize a few things here and there about it, but not know it was all in the same year. Let’s see what we have:

Karl Marx produced DAS KAPITAL and unleashed a ‘final solution’ to privately held capital. He modeled his thoughts after the strain of the French Revolution which resulted in Robespierre’s ‘Reign Of Terror.’ Way to go Karl.

Huxley pressed Darwin enough to get ORIGIN OF SPECIES finished and out there. In a way, he had to. While the new theory of vast time was undercutting many Biblical truths, there was one item on the horizon which would certainly have damaged the theory in its most recent aspects.

That was Schneider’s study of tectonic plates and how the shapes of land masses of earth were recently broken into their current form. Schneider believed this corresponded to the worldwide narratives of a global catastrophe. This would have drastically shortened the time span of earth geology from Lyell and Hutton’s views.

But the Huxley family pushed ORIGINS internationally and beat Schneider out of the market, only being handled by a small Paris press.

Finally, Dickens completed A TALE OF TWO CITIES. Here is an account in dramatic fashion that is sympathetic to the masses of France in the 1790s, but totally aware that Marx was following the mob-rule, police-state ‘answer’.

So what about the resurrection?

In TALE, Sydney Carton has a self-declared worthless life in the law practice, but is very interested in the case of one Miss Lucie Manette. In a masterful Dickens coincidence, Carton looks like Lucie’s boyfriend who is accused of spying for the French, and Carton is able to save Darney by discrediting witnesses.

Carton wants to improve his life, including give up drinking, and has somehow latched on to John 11’s line: “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes on me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” And somehow this inspires Carton to befriend the new couple in spite of losing Lucie to Darney. And then a moment arises when he is seriously needed.

The coincidence of looking like Darney enables him to pull off a jail switch when Darney is accused by the French ‘Reign of Terror’ of aristocratic roots, which Darney had rescinded. Carton gives his life for the Darney family, again quoting “I am the resurrection…” as his hope for his demise.

Dickens used one of the most powerful lines of Jesus to let the English world gain a warning about where Marxism would lead.











 
The opening post attempts something ambitious, namely, connecting the intellectual upheavals of 1859 to a deeper theological point about resurrection and hope. But it's difficult to see the connection he attempts to make, particularly with the distracting historical inaccuracies. With the benefit of historical precision and clearer expression, the connections being drawn between literature, ideology, and faith could be legitimate and powerful. Rather than offering a conspiracy theory or melodramatic cultural lament, it could be sharpened into a reflection on how secular ideologies like economic Marxism and social Darwinism attempt to resolve the human condition without resurrection—while Dickens, drawing from the gospel of John, paints a picture of true hope requiring a cross and an empty tomb.
  • Marx did not publish Das Kapital in 1859 but almost ten years later in three volumes spanning nearly 30 years (1867–1894).
  • I don't know who Schneider is supposed to be, but nobody was studying plate tectonics in the mid-19th century—because that discipline wasn't formalized until the mid-20th century (c. 1965-1967).
And the idea of an old earth did not undercut any biblical truths—although it did undercut certain interpretations and beliefs, like a recent special creation.

They are not "distracting" inaccuracies [MOD EDIT: Rule-violating text removed from post]. They are the fabric of the destruction of our society, so decide whose side you are are on.

That is a different claim from the one you made originally which the historical evidence contradicts. You said that "Karl Marx produced Das Kapital" in the "highly consequential year" of 1859.

If easily refutable historical inaccuracies compromise the credibility of your post, then they are distracting from the point your post intends to make. As I said, "With the benefit of historical precision and clearer expression, the connections being drawn between literature, ideology, and faith could be legitimate and powerful" (emphasis added).

There is no substantial error. Marx was active those years, meeting at the soirees of renegade novelist G Elliot and many other leading London intellectuals. There is no substantial error.

In 10 years Harvard would be replacing all reference to Creator or creation in legal communication to evolutionary terminology.

Don't miss the big picture. Good for you and your attention to detail, but not to all detail.

My claim was that the year was consequential, and the 1848 stamp shows that he was actively pushing that by that year; books got reprinted frequently.

A moderator said it was 'distracting' to misplace a date. Fair enough. Yet considering the entirety of the post, I found it distracting to go after that detail, when Marx was so active for so many of those years.

As for Schneider,
we know that Darwin resisted publishing what he was writing for years, prob 15. As historian D McCullough writes, the great ideas never happen apart from the lives of the people proposing them. You can see this dramatized in the British production CREATION which is played by P Bettany.

Schneider's work was snuffed by the Huxley distaste for all things Christian. I'm sure they were tired of the main religious friction of the times, but it is not an excuse to undermine facts. This was in part driven by Lyell's derogatory term 'the physico-theologians' who believed there was a demonstrable connection between the two realms of knowledge, reason and revelation, instead of a split world. Lyell was one of the first to use the modern split category where the text was 'scientifically false, but morally necessary'; while he hoped to bury Moses, he supported Christian sunday schools in London where thousands of laboring children got no other moral education, and would eventually steal his own sheep for food.

It would be almost a hundred years before the tectonic view was reintroduced as an entirely slow naturalistic event that had nothing to do with Genesis--nor with other ancient cataclysm accounts. At the same time, as UW's Montgomery had shown, "Bible" fundamentalists in 1905 widely believed that the Genesis cataclysm was confined to the Caspian sea because of "science." That's how convincingly the fraud of modern science had reshaped the landscape in the new era of mass media. Montgomery says no one has refuted Whitcomb and Morris's 1960 treatment of the global flood, but it is not considered to be 'science'--so really, everyone in conventional state-approved education does refute it.

Compare that with Rockefeller seeking to get women in the work force for the tax revenue to the government and for the state to entirely control education. That reigns through to today in public school where, this spring, I read a federal education director say that any plausible discussion of universal creation narratives in the public schools would be an unmitigated disaster that would harm the children's ability to think. The goal always was that: the control of thought.

When I arrived in the capitol of Alaska a few years ago, I mentioned Schneider to a state geologist at a breakfast and he said, I think there were actually two people whose tectonics were shut down, but we were unable to determine if the name Pellegrini was a separate scientist or a hyphenated name joined to Schneider.

The case of Bretz
This case of science fraud is more well-known. He rode all over the Pacific Northwest on horseback in the 1890s and concluded that an event affecting nearly a quarter of the continent had taken place. His scale was so large, and far-reaching, he already had extended it to explain why the Williamette valley was so fertile, from the same event. His explanation was totally dismissed by "science" because its date was essentially the Biblical cataclysm. "Science" had already confined the flood to the Caspian Sea. In the 1940s, he was finally given an honorary doctorate. (I was on a trip two decades ago and was able to stop to peak inside Autzen Stadium, U Oregon. The workers were remodeling the main entrance because a non-native slurry-transported mastodon was discovered in the sediment below it during a utility dig.)

Giantism
Major US institutions have joined in the fraud. Two documentaries showing up to 5 instances per minute of footage have recorded the extent of giantism around the world. The more recent is by Dr. D. Biddle of Genesis Apologetics. This includes extremely advanced societies in the past with huge physical capabilities that are rarely mentioned in favor of the stone or bronze age pounding out hand-cut grain. There are many cases of removed artefacts on a scale that is unbelievable, because they would damage the conventional view of human history. So we could say that we live in a period of engineering fraud as well.
