The Bible does not clearly define about cremation as a means to dispose of the dead. However, there is no scriptural prohibition of cremation in the New Testament. The Bible neither favors nor forbids the process of cremation.

1 Corinthians 15:35-55
“It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.”

However, there are Christian practices and heathen practices and in our day because of a lack of knowledge, some in the church have adopted heathen practices in numerous areas, besides just the practice of cremation. We can clearly see in the Bible the tradition of the Israelites, God’s chosen people, was to always bury their dead and never to burn dead bodies, as the heathen round about them did. This is demonstrated in the Old Testament, as well as the New Testament. Jesus, Himself, was buried in a tomb.

If the Bible neither favors nor forbids cremation, then why is it a "heathen" practice?

Can you also clarify the purpose of this opening post? Is this intended to be a discussion on burial versus cremation, or is this thread intended as an indictment of the Church evidenced by an acceptance of cremation that indicates some degree of adulteration? Or both?

I, for one, would not consider an above-ground tomb a burial, certainly not a burial in the ground. If burial in the ground is the standard, then non-burial above ground could be considered just as outside the norm as cremation.

Why does the bible says to bury our dead and about cremation ?

According to the following URL the bible doesn't say anything about burying the dead or cremation in regards to being right or wrong.

Cremation still gives me a bit of the 'creeps' but it is practical.

(Thinking out loud)..."What of the many Christians in the Twin Towers (on 9-11) who were cremated instantly?" Or martyrs burned at the stake/
agreed it's still creepy

Or the many people killed in war, blown to bits by bombs, all those lost at sea, or frozen into the ice atop the Himalayas? Countless people have lost their lives and never been buried. I guess they're all disobedience along with all of us who never buried them (dead people don't bury themselves).

Really liked the last paragraph.

Arlington Cemetary would be a lot bigger. Visit the walls containing the urns and imagine them to be stacks of coffins or how much more land would be used taking up all those bodies.

On the other hand, cremation leads to increased "global warming" which leads to more death and more cremation and more "global warming" ... we're D O O M E D if we don't stop cremation !!!!
*end of satire*

LOL! Yeah, not going there.

....because we're all going to be incinerated by an overheated planet, so if burial is the only way not to obtain eternal life when dead we'd better start burying ourselves now. 😵‍💫

(yeah, I know I said I wasn't going there but couldn't resist the temptation. Guess I'm doubly doomed)

Because it wouldn't be a good idea for dead folks to just lie there and rot (duh). Of course putting them in a casket tends to eliminate the only good they could do for the earth as fertilizer.

Cremation isn't directly addressed, so a matter of personal choice (and economics) . My Wife wants a "normal funeral" with internment, and I 'll be cremated (MUCH Cheaper).

Someone has said that cremation is just a speedier way of becoming ashes again...

Genesis 3:19 BSB
By the sweat of your brow you will eat your bread, until you return to the ground—because out of it were you taken. For dust you are, and to dust you shall return.”

ANd for what it's worth, after the cremation, the cremains are passed through a "Cremulator" which is a grinding machine that powers any big chunks that remain after the incineration, so that everything fits nicely into the overpriced Urn.

Yup, my dad's body went through that process in 2019, overpriced urn included.

That is a very interesting question

I was looking and studying about this and thinking that perhaps the reason that the inhabitants of the middle east did not utilize cremation for disposing of their dead because there was not much in the way of fuel such as firewood to perform - cremation

The actual cremation usually takes approximately 3-4 hours and the temperature should be a steady constant temperature of 1400 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit

if the inhabitants of the Middle Eastern desert cremated all of millions of the dead bodies from all of the wars and just basic. natural death experiences they would quickly destroy all of their trees and vegetation and oil they use to cook and stay warm in winter

their access to burning materials would be very, very limited in the desert environment - especially when that fuel was needed for forging and melting metal and making weapons from metal.

Cooking, lighting , heat in winter and making weapons took everything they could find from their environment

even fuel for these activities and necessities were very limited and had to be utilized for just basic day to day survival and defense

the desert is not abundant with fuel resources as we find in other places of the world where cremation was part of a culture
