Books and flags are nothing more than paper and fabric.

However...burning them shows a disrespect for those that hold them dearly.

If you burn the bible as some sort of public demonstration...go for it. I feel sorry for that person because it shows their lost spiritual position and enmity with the creator God.

As to the flag....the flag and what it represents in the USA represents your right to burn the flag. In doing so you spit in the face of those who fought and died for the flag, that is those who represented the flag and gave you the right...to burn the flag.

Books are more than paper. They are thoughts and ideas. Flags represent things. I am not in favor of making the burning of books or flags illegal, but there are very few instances where I would burn either. The same goes for burning of music. In America, we have freedom of speech and the right to protest but some things are in poor taste.

The benefits of 'free speech' outweigh the distractions of rude and irritating behaviors as perceived by many.

You may perhaps not like this book or that flag.
But to burn it publicly as a demonstration I find overdoing things.

One can express one's criticism in other ways

@ the burning of the library of Alexandria

Despite the widespread modern belief that the Library of Alexandria was burned once and cataclysmically destroyed, the Library actually declined gradually over the course of several centuries.
