Questions for the church (the body of Christ)

Just vote Republican, no matter what. [just kidding] ;)
Yep. I agree.
How about "conservative," rather than "Republican"?

My wife and I are involved in local and state politics and we've met many politicians who run within the Republican Party. Some are much more Republican than others. Some are much more consistently conservative than others.

  • The rule of law.
  • The Constitution is the preeminent rule of law.
  • Small, decentralized government.
  • Representative republic governing a pluralistic society where the will of the majority rules, but not at the expense of the rights of the minority.
  • Use of all societal institutions (business, religion, media. education, etc.) and not just dependence on the government as the chief agent of change.
  • Fiscal responsibility. Money is spent only on the purpose for which it was collected and there is an accounting of those funds. Any excess is either returned to the people or legislated for another purpose.
  • Gradual, incremental change based upon what has proven to work in the past.
  • Distrust of power because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

These are the kind of conservative principles that separate RINOs from Republicans and Republicans from conservatives.
I heard good advice on this from the most unlikely of places ... Creflo Dollar [I know, who would have guessed?]

When you watch a Soccer game [Football for you people in foreign countries :) ], there are THREE teams on the field. There is the HOME team and the AWAY team, each with its cheering fans and each striving towards a different goal. There are strict rules for each team about what they may or may not do and where they may or may not go. Then there is a THIRD team on the field wearing striped shirts. This THIRD team owes allegiance to NEITHER of the other two teams and is free to move about the field through, among and between each of the other teams. This is allowed because this "Striped" team owed allegiance to something higher than the local fans of either team. They are sworn to uphold the RULES and owe allegiance to THE GAME.
WE are IN this world but not OF this world. We are not playing for any POLITICAL team. We owe allegiance to a HIGHER AUTHORITY. So we are free to move among either or both Political Team as need arises in pursuit of the Goals of OUR SUPREME COMMANDER. Whichever person or organization or program supports and aligns with the PLAN of God, we should support. Whatever does not support or align with the plan of God, we should not support. We play for a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TEAM according to COMPLETELY DIFFERENT RULES than the World.

Not bad advice, imho.
Yep. I agree.

Not bad at all. 😁
Not sure I want to take advice from Creflo, but I suppose even a broken clock is correct twice a day. But he is also wrong. There is a fourth team: the crowd. A team will fail if it lacks the crowd's support. A crowd's support during the game can profoundly affect players' performance, just as their disdain can. A crowd's support, or lack of support outside the gameplay can bankrupt a team.

Who wins the contest among the "Powers and principalities and rulers of this world" is of no concern to us who are citizens of another Kingdom and answer to another King. It would be like concerning oneself with whether the CROWD is choosing HEDONISM or LEGALISM when we are born from above into TEAM GRACE!

That is incorrect.

And I have already proven that to be incorrect with the multiple cases where scripture directs, COMMANDS, Christians to be overcomers, and overcomers right here on the earth. In point of fact, the very last event in the Bible is the new city of peace coming down out of heaven to earth! The earth does not cease to exist; it persists. The very last words of the Bible come from Jesus himself.

Revelation 22:20-21
He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming quickly." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.

Where's he coming to? The earth! The judgment precedes that. The fiery lake precedes the coming of the new city.

Revelation 20:14-21-2
Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and there is no longer any sea. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready as a bride adorned for her husband.

John sees the judgment and then he sees the new city coming down out of heaven. We (most of us, at any rate ;)) all agree: the book of Revelation is not linear; it is not written in chronological order. So nothing I write in this post should be read to say anything different. The simple fact is this: Nothing in Revelation has the new city coming before the fiery lake! .So, when we open the Bible we find God is concerned with the earth and we find His very first command and blessing are explicitly about the earth. We find this same exact theme running through the Bible from beginning to end, and the final event reported is a fulfillment of what we now call the cultural mandate and great commission.

Like Israel before, the Church is directed to be an example to ALL. The contest among the "powers and principalities" is of no concern. It has also already been won. The blessings cited in Ephesians 1 are stated to be in accordance with Christ's victory.

Ephesians 1:19-23
....These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

And we know from Psalm 110 that the Lord will remain enthroned at the LORD's right hand until the LORD defeats all the Lord's enemies. Victory won. Clean up time.

Point of clarification: we're the players on the field. The "crowd," the "witness" is heavenly. And like the end of the match, so too is their influence decided.

That is incorrect.

Then feel free to stay up nights concerning yourself whether the unsaved choose a false religion of LEGALISM of embrace the carnality of HEDONISM as their chosen path of rejecting God. I will sleep sound at night trusting God to deal with the world as I focus on the more humble task that He has assigned to me: Giving a reason for the hope that is within me.

[PS. there is a NEW heaven and earth ... I read to the end as well.]

Who wins the contest among the "Powers and principalities and rulers of this world" is of no concern to us who are citizens of another Kingdom and answer to another King......

Self-contradicting posts speak for themselves to their own lack of veracity. Ad hominem red herrings and straw men do not change that fact.
Then feel free to stay up nights concerning yourself.....
Should have kept the posts about the posts and not the posters.

Ad hominem red herrings and straw men do not change that fact.

There was no ad hominem.
I made a statement that "something" was no concern to "US" ...
Who wins the contest among the "Powers and principalities and rulers of this world" is of no concern to us who are citizens of another Kingdom and answer to another King.

You refuted my statement ...
That is incorrect.

And I have already proven that to be incorrect with the multiple cases where scripture directs, COMMANDS, Christians to be overcomers, and overcomers right here on the earth.

Which to all outward appearance would seem to me a claim that YOU believe "Who wins the contest among the 'Powers and principalities and rulers of this world' IS of concern to YOU". Taking you at your word, I acknowledged that you were free to ...

Then feel free to stay up nights concerning yourself whether the unsaved choose a false religion of LEGALISM or embrace the carnality of HEDONISM as their chosen path of rejecting God.

... but I would not be joining you.

It was not an ad hominem, but an affirmation that there was no "US" ... you and I were pursuing different goals with the world. I am indifferent to the unsaved CROWD and their support:
Who wins the contest among the "Powers and principalities and rulers of this world" is of no concern to us who are citizens of another Kingdom and answer to another King.

while you embrace it as necessary:

What is the role and purpose of the Church?
To preach the Gospel.

How do you measure its success?
Good question. I'm sure some would say numbers in the pews but I would say faithfulness to services. Are people coming regularly, not the number of people but the same people. For example, from an Orthodox perspective, parishioners coming to Vespers in the evening, Orthros before Divine Liturgy, etc. In other Christian faith traditions, Wednesday prayer meetings, etc.

So when I coached high school track I wanted dedicated runners. If that was only 11 kids but worked hard, that was better than 35 who didn't want to do squat but wear a track suit, if that makes sense.

What is church membership? How would you support it biblically? What makes one a member of a church?
From the Orthodox perspective, baptism. When baptized, one dies to this world and is born again in the resurrection of Christ into eternal life; the one who is baptized is clothed with the "garments of salvation" symbolized by the white baptismal robe which is the "new humanity" of Jesus Himself who is the new and heavenly Adam (John 3, Romans 5). During the baptismal rite in the Orthodox Christian faith, the words of St Paul are chanted three times, as the symbol of his procession to the Kingdom of God and his entrance into eternal life: “For as many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Alleluia” (Galatians 3.27).

Why do trials occur?
Trials occur because they are part of life in this world. There are three sources of suffering. First, from persecution of others in body and soul. Second, sickness and disease and finally, suffering is spirit because of the sins in this world.

What is the purpose of suffering?
One could just read the New Testament lol but in all honestly here are some verses that I think show us the purpose of suffering, "all who who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted (1 Timothy 3:12)"; and that Christians should “count it all joy” when they “meet various trials” (James 1:2), “rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name (Acts 5.41)."

What role in leadership do you believe women should have within the church? In what context should they teach? Are there any restrictions?
Women were of course loyal coworkers from the Apostle Paul's point of view for example, he depended on them to help spread the gospel. He spoke of consecrated virgins and widows. He wrote that in Christ there is neither Greek [Gentile] nor Jew, slave nor free, male nor female; all are one in Christ. Now, that being said, a women's major role in leadership is in the home, with her children. I was just at a conference where an Orthodox scholar, a woman, spoke about the Orthodox phronema (mindset). This is fine and good and was a great talk. It did not of course take place in a Liturgical setting.

I hope this was clear.

1) The role, purpose or chief-end of the Church is to Glorify God and enjoy him always. We measure the Church's success through the Standard of Scripture; the Faith which was once delivered unto the Saints...

Maybe each of those 9 questions should be a separate topic for each thread?

When it is not about the success of the church but rather sharing what the Lord Jesus Christ has done & is doing in the body of Christ.
What is church membership? How would you support it biblically? What makes one a member of a church?
By believing in the Lord Jesus Christ & that God has raised Him from the dead is how we are saved and has become a member of the body of Christ.

Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Once a believer is saved by faith in Jesus Christ; discipleship begins in how we are to run that race by faith in Jesus Christ to look to Him daily in helping us lay aside every weight & sin thereby walking in the light in fellowship with the Father & the Son in bearing fruits as His disciples.

  • What is church discipline? How would you support it biblically? How should it be used within the body?
Matthew 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. 16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. 17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

Bishops aka elders are supposed to watch over the flock and not just the pastors, but that went out of practice as it seems the pastors are supposed to perform the whole body of Christ as if they are every member of the body of Christ.

1 Timothy 3:1This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; 3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; 4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; 5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) 6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. 11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Not sure why or how elders have been vocal only in congregational meetings, but I am sure God requires them to be more involved than that.

God makes us a Member of the Universal Church of Christ; we are members/parts of HIS Body, as he is the Head. We are the branches and he is the Vine; we've been grafted in by Grace through Faith. Justification and the Spirit's Seal make us Members of God's Church...

I answer Posts like this one question at a time. You have to; otherwise the responses will be too long (especially you, since you have long Posts anyway). As an Original Post, it's OK to ask it... https://christcentered.community.fo...the-church-the-body-of-christ.1145/post-42006
Long posts is one of my shortcomings.

If the OP saw certain points or questions not being addressed, he may want to repost that question in a separate thread to solicit a better response.

God makes us a Member of the Universal Catholic Church of Christ. We are members of HIS Body, and he is the Head. We are the branches and he is the Vine, grafted in by Grace through Faith...
I understand that Catholic means universal but since Jesus nor any of the apostles had used that term, it seems like using Catholic which identifies with that synagogue of Satan, the Vatican, is giving the appearance of evil as if identifying with the RCC in the eyes of the world for which we should avoid.

The body of Christ or the church of Christ should be sufficient in addressing the Christian believers, until such times, anyone should be speaking differently, then may the other members of the body of Christ address it Biblically in correcting one another in Christ's love

There is water baptism and then there is that baptism of the Holy Spirit which happens at salvation as faith comes by hearing the gospel.

Water baptism is usually a public witness of a new believer having come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and his or her desire to follow Jesus Christ by faith as His disciple, having been water baptized in His name for.

Water baptism has nothing to do with salvation, but the baptism of the Holy Ghost does by the hearing of the word; the gospel. That is how "faith" comes and thus receiving the Holy Ghost ( faith which is a fruit of the Spirit ) for why our believing in Jesus Christ is a work of the Father.

What is your view on infant baptism?
Not Biblical nor was it ever practiced by the early churches as far as the ones in the N.T. is concern.
