How old is the earth?

The earth as we know it.... was formless and void and so therefore did not exist.

Those that contend that the earth was devastated and covered by water are misapplying His words as if meaning the same thing as Jermiah 4:23 when in context of both... His words are talking about something entirely different.

Jeremiah 4:20 Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.

21 How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet?

22 For my people is foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have none understanding: they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.

23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.

24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.

25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.

26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the Lord, and by his fierce anger.

In context, verse 23 testify to the land being there but emptied out of living things and has become a wilderness.

In the context of Genesis 1:1- 2:3 which is the first complete creation account, since scripture did not originally come with numbered chapters and numbered verses, Genesis 1:1 is the topic and the following verses was about how God did that in verse 1 in 6 days, finishing it by resting on the 7th day and so the meaning of genesis 1:2 is that earth was not there and neither was the heavens that first day when God used the 2nd and 3rd day to create the earth and then the universe the 4th day for the purpose of giving her lights on the earth for signs, seasons, times, and tears. Hence, the heavens and the earth was not there on day one.
The language of Jer 4 appears to be futuristic.....not a description of the past.

re God's work on heavens and earth
remember if you don't get out the Hebrew vocab you are looking through a glass darkly. The 'shami' was made in 7 days; that's not the outer stars ('kavov'). So the text is correct, but you are mistaken to think it is about the whole universe. V8 says the 'shami' was the 'birqiya'--the firmament. This self-references what things are.
Again, how can God rest the 7th day from all His creation if it took Him longer to create everything?

Genesis 2:1Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Makes one wonder why there is no push from Christian educators to prove it is a false science in the school textbooks.
Those "christian" teachers are false teachers following Satans "science" to strip God of being a creator. Many do it unknowingly.

Even the 10 commandments mention a 6 day creation with a day of rest.

The Bible has that one large land mass a lot bigger than what science has pictured that to be.

There is a sunken continent off the coast of Australia of which they assume is the fabled Atlantis but it is not, because I really believe tectonic plates are not responsible for the dividing of the earth in the days of Peleg, but a dropping of huge swath of land mass below sea level had occurred.

Genesis 10:25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

So the region we call the Atlantic Ocean was once land as every other place was except that one place where all the Seas were originally at per that Pacific basin before the earth was divided in the days of Peleg after the Biblical global flood.

I believe asteroids hit the earth for how the fountains of the deep were broken up since the earth was watered by a mist and that mid Atlantic Ridge that is now underwater in the Atlantic Ocean was like Old Faithful at Yellowstone, but as a whole mountain range, shooting up mists to water the whole earth. The asteroid impacts emptied the water beneath the fountains in causing it to gush forth to flood the one large land mass.

On top of that, the asteroid impacts on the moon started the moon slowly moving away from the earth, which causes the mist watering the earth, to rise up to condense into clouds to rain for the first time on earth, thus adding to0 the deluge.

God commanded the waters to recede and the rapid formation of the Grand canyon testified to the direction to where the flood waters were receding towards; The Marrianna Trench. Science has discovered an ocean near the earth core but it is more of a mineral ocean rather than a watery one like we know of on the surface, hence the deluge of the flood waters is where that water receded to.

That being the place, that means where the reservoirs were under the earth that misted the earth remained emptied and so the weight of the land caused the large land mass to drop in various places below sea level, causing tsunamis, tectonic plate movements to form vocacnos and earthquakes. Looking at the map, I see tsunamis rushing over Latin America from the Pacific Basin and heading towards that topical Sahara in wiping it out by a tsunamis, creating that volcano and earthquake.

Course, other areas dropped as well for why we find temples and other buildings off the coast of India, and even Cuba. Many sightings of supposed sunken Atlantis has been found in the Atlantic Ocean but nothing conclusive other than proving that the Atlantic Ocean was once above water. Granted Atlantis eventually dropped into the Atlantic Ocean later on than in the days of Peleg, but to does add credence to my theory based on His words that the asteroids impact on the moon and the earth caused the Biblical global flood and that the one large land mass did not become what it was as we know the divided continents today until the days of Peleg.

That is what I am seeing which I believe is by His grace & by His help, but I am sure we will know all things when we see Him face to face one day.

It is unfortunate, but I agree.

In the context, it reads to me as what has occurred.
I see in the preceding verses..."9“In that day,” declares the LORD,"....In that day sounds future.

verse 27 goes on to say...
27For this is what the LORD says:
“The whole land will be desolate,
but I will not finish its destruction..........will be sounds future.

The verse also contains ....
6Raise a signal flag toward Zion.
Seek refuge! Do not delay!
For I am bringing disaster from the north,
and terrible destruction.

Could this be Gog?
15And you will come from your place out of the far north—you and many peoples with you, all riding horses—a mighty horde, a huge army. 16You will advance against My people Israel like a cloud covering the land. It will happen in the latter days, O Gog, that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me when I show Myself holy in you before their eyes.

I can agree with that. The continents were broken up and some slid into each other forming the mountain ranges. We can know it happened swiftly when we look at the bent layers of sediment...strata in a recumbent fold...and understand the sediment still had to be somewhat soft being recently deposited by the flood of Noah. Hardened millions of years old rock don't bend that way.

+ 1 for the flood model.
Genesis 10:25 And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

I don't believe that was pangea breaking up but as you said the sea level dropping....it may also be the dividing of the people at the tower of babel.

That is a good working theory.

That too is a working possibility. Some even say the rain was the canopy collapsing....melting?

A hypsometric curve of the planet shows there was plenty of water.

Psalms 104 hints at that.

I'm still trying to figure out if they were pre or post flood.

That is true. It'll be interesting to see how much we got right. I do know the old earth uniformatarian view is way out to lunch.

I'm not saying it was not ordinary light (whatever that is). But what you assume to be ordinary may well be extraordinary, but to us, the usual. I think we tend to attribute more substance to human understanding than is warranted.

Does light have to proceed from a "natural" source, in order to be ordinary light? Why?

When early Genesi wants to depict something extraordinary, it has no problem: the series, the swirling blades, etc. there is no reason in v3 to think of something unusual,

A mass energy explosion would not be work. I’m not sure any of it really was work. But relative to the delicate nature of animal designs and dna, a msss explosion is not work.

Btw, I recently found a Native American tribe narrative that the earth was dark and watery for a long time before mankind. How would they know anything close to Genesis? That’s 50 % of 1:2!

I forgot to mention that you are missing how the Hebrew limits the scope of activity here: v8 tells us that firmament is the local things that mark and signal to earth. So ‘heavens and earth’ is actually limited to the local and is the ‘Shami’ not the ‘kavov’—stars.

That in itself leaves open the other ‘spreading’ of the stars mentioned by Ps 104 and Is 45. Open means it was done differently, for another purpose, in another time. Day 1 is when light from it arrived on earth.

Prior to their ancestors being spread around at the Tower of Babel event they knew of creation and the flood. Babel happened and people were spread over the globe...some became Native American tribes. They took with them the creation account where over generations they became watered down...whisper down the lane so to speak.

Some Christians think the earth is between 6,000 and 15,000 years old, coinciding with the Neolithic Age. Astronomers think it is 4.5 billion years old. Here is an attempt to resolve this incongruity.
Here is another attempt...

Hebrews 11:3 NKJV
By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

I'll go with 6,500-15,000 years old.

Earth was there on Day 1
Earth was created on Day 1, as the Bible states.

Here is the historical account of Day 1 of the creation week.

Gen. 1:1-5 (VW)
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void, with darkness on the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
3 Then God said, Let there be light! And there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided between the light and darkness.
5 God called the light, Day; and the darkness He called, Night. Thus, the evening and the morning: Day One.

At the start of Day 1, God created the heavens and the earth. At this point, the earth was unformed and unfilled and there was no created light yet.

Then God created light (not the sun or stars - that came later).

Darkness, then light - Day 1.

So why is it heavenS and not heaven?

Thanks. I stand corrected as you have included further verses in context.

Does not explain away God resting from all His labor in creating the heavens and the earth on that 7th day.

So it cannot be a local phenomenon in space.

If God created the heavens and the earth long before day one, and that it was there before He spoke light into existence to establish the evening and the morning that first day, then why do that for surely the lights in the heavens were already there to establish the evening and the morning?

Hence, Genesis 1:1 is the topic and the following verses all the way to Genesis 2:3 is how God did it in Genesis 1:1.

There was no earth nor heaven in day one but just water.

You cannot establish the beginning by that first day with evening and morning when the lights from the supposedly already existing universe was already casting her lights already on the supposedly already existing earth long before day one.
