It can be called suppressing the truth, or idolatry. It can even be called exploiting the sinful nature of man for gain. What is amazing is these modern day powers that be have a greater understanding of how all these things work and are more than willing to use them against common people. This idea has always been around. Old sayings like 'a herd mentality' come to mind. But this is much more because computers have entered the arena. This is scary stuff. Algorithms designed to push all the right psychological buttons to get the desired results.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer adds yet another element. That the path of least resistance is a comfort zone that the masses seek out when bombarded with problems and crisis. This is what politicians do today. Never waist a good crisis, right? This comfort zone can be called a herd mentality with motive. It's not stupidity in the traditional sense, but that's what Bonhoeffer called it.
To think of that same herd mentality in the context of social media. Yikes!
All this is being used against us today more than people know.
