2Tim 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Profane?

Me not likey. The word does not actually show the depth of what is being said.

Here is what the BDAG has to share on the word in respect to 2Tim. We emphasized the actually definition in bold print so that it would be easily ascertain for those of us who are not use to the format. "pert. to being accessible to everyone and therefore devoid of real significance, pointless, worthless οἱ β. καὶ γραώδεις μῦθοι foolish tales, such as are told by elderly women 1 Ti 4:7 (satirical indictment of cosmic speculations, opp. edifying discourse). κενοφωνίαι pointless and empty talk, frivolous talk (cp. 3 Macc 4:16) 6:20; 2 Ti 2:16."

With that in mind the words of Jesus in Matt 12:36 come to mind, "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."

Below are the 4 other verses where the Greek word is used that is translated profane. Check them out with idea that the Greek word pertains to that which is accessible to everyone and therefore devoid of real significance, pointless, worthless.

1Tim 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
1Tim 4:7 But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
1Tim 6:20 O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called: 2Tim 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Heb 12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

2Tim 2:16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

True ,I would add the focus is more on the living word of God

I would offer the shunning is of false prophecy oral traditions of dying mankind, as a law of men .They shun the work of God looking to there own dying flesh as a false hope

Believers yoked with Christ are empowered to obey the loving commandment to study rightly dividing (sola scriptura) we can seek the approval of Christ who works in us with us (Emanuel )

2 Timothy 2: 15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Shun those who do not obey the loving commandment of the Holy Spirit, the teacher, comforter, guide. . last but not least brings to our new minds the previous things he has taught (John 14)

He warns us of the legion of anti-christs , false prophets, false apostles. Another teaching authority other than sola scriptura (all things written in the law and prophets ) They say we do need dying mankind to teach us. We can shun there teachings

We can preach. He alone is the infalible teaching master as Lord of lords

Christ will not share his glory with dying flesh and blood

A wile of the evil one.as a false law .Venerate puff up the errand boys special delivery .UPS ,FED X ,Pont Express apostles "sent messengers" Those with beautiful feet. that

They have shunned sola scriptura in order to make it about thier own dying flesh A wile of Lucifer the spirit of legion. . puffed up men that lift themselves above sola scriptura

1 Corinthians 3: 6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour.(Nothing from the delivery men apostle) For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building.

You are correct. The word is not only against profanity. The context is of foolish teachings and vain arguments, that have no profit in doctrine, and also can work against godly living in Christ.

A couple more Scriptures for you:

1 Tim 6:3If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings,

Rom 16:18For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
