What about the Mentally Handicapped?

I have a nephew who has brain damage because of delayed delivery and the chord wrapped around his neck. He is functional, very socialable, shows spontaneous joy all over his face when he is communicating with people. His speech is hard to decipher; he can't read or write or drive. But he holds down a job. His capacity for comprehending complex things is very limited.

His mother is a Christian and teaches him at the level of his limitations. He loves Jesus. Loves church and his pastor. He is also very intuitive when it comes to right and wrong, and to the character of people and things. There is no way to know what goes on in his head or his inner thoughts. His love of Jesus and Christianity, his loyalty to them---he is now in his 50's---all the days since his mother was regenerated, says to me that he is saved. That is something that was done by God, for each and every one of the redeemed. God changes hearts. My nephew has whatever God has given him and that is enough. It is not doctrinal or theological knowledge that saves. It is God who pulls a person out of the mire and places them in Christ, and Christ in them.
Amen!

I'm asking 'are they expected to have faith?'

Look at John the Baptist, while in the womb, being near Jesus, jumped in his mother's womb. I would find it hard to believe John the Baptist as an unborn infant, knowing and understanding even as much as someone with Autism, Down syndrome, or any other mental illness.

As @Josheb said, these people do respond and respond well to the gospel. I can see why they would.
When the Holy Spirit does His work, you can take it to the bank!

He gathers all the elect.

As @Arial said, "It is God who pulls a person out of the mire and places them in Christ, and Christ in them."

Thankfully, it is He who does that.

I think he was being rhetorical. I, for one, do not believe all infants go to heaven (unless God chooses to save them all).
We need an "agree" emoticon.

Deserves underlining, that... Amen, brother. Amen, @Arial

That is a really good example! Jesus was still in his mother's womb too. What an unparalleled illustration that it is God the Holy Spirit who elects and saves. Nothing of ourselves.

Our God is awesome! Amen!
