How do we, as individual Christians, come to the Bible and interpret it correctly? Are there any guidelines that we have that will lead us away from error and to the truthful interpretation of God's word?

These are important questions. These are questions that new believers hope to have answers to. I know I did.

Another important question is: Why study the bible?
I'll answer this briefly now: Well, I'll let God's word answer.

4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Deuteronomy 6:4-9

If this is what God says, then it is very important for a believer to know His word.

If you, who read this, are a new Christian, it will be nice to have some fellowship with you. I would suggest, if you do not already attend a church, find one and attend. Scripture says, " Do not neglect fellowship. This is very important.

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works,
not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24-25.

Also, do not hesitate to ask any questions you may have. We have some really good Christians here who would love to answer any questions you might have and get to know you.
If you would rather just follow along with this thread and not ask questions, that is fine also.

FYI, much of the base information in this thread will come from R. C. Sproul's book: Knowing Scripture.
