I would think he lost his source of faith, demanding the inheritance before the father dies. He spent it foolishly and the same faith as the power of love that he departed from drew him back to the father Before being seen ,from a far off the father took off like a Jet down the run way running to meet him.

Called the parable of two sons. I call the parable of the waiting long suffering father. both serve same purpose Only God not seen is God alone good .

Luke 15 :20 And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

Luke 15:1-2 gives us the reason the following parables were told to the Pharisees.
Rather than rejoicing at sinners coming to the Lord, they scoffed.
So Jesus reminded them how they should be acting.

The 3 parables:​

Lost sheep returned - should be a time to rejoice! (Luke 15:6)​

Lost coin returned - should be a time to rejoice! (Luke 15:9)​

Lost brother returned - should be a time to rejoice! (Luke 15:32)​

Jesus sets the premise of why He tells the parables:

Luke 15​

(1) Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him.​

(2) And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”​

The Pharisees couldn't perceive that "sinners" (ie. the lost) should ever be received in a joyful manner.
So Jesus tells them the parables, each of which tell of receiving the lost joyfully.
