Influential evangelical pastor and theologian John MacArthur dead at 86 after health battle

John MacArthur, pastor of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, died Monday at the age of 86 after a battle with pneumonia.

"Our hearts are heavy, yet rejoicing, as we share the news that our beloved pastor and teacher John MacArthur has entered into the presence of the Savior," read a Monday-night post on the X account of "Grace to You" which is MacArthur's media ministry. "This evening, his faith became sight. He faithfully endured until his race was run."

Great that he is now in glory, but he will be missed here on earth.

I didn’t always agree with John MacArthur on every point of theology, but I recognize he stood boldly in an age that often preferred compromise. I pray that his labor for Christ will stir many to search the Scriptures more deeply and cling more firmly to the truth.

I entrust his soul to the righteous Judge, who knows those who are His, and I pray the Lord will comfort those grieving his loss.

Being a "third-culture" kid, as Missionary kids, Military kids, World Traveler kids, [Foreign]Oil field worker kids etc call themselves, I have a weird perspective on life, and a sense of humor that notices and relishes the ways other people think. Sometimes I think also, those who are "already but not yet" citizens of Heaven, have a bit of "third culture" to them.

One thing I heard John McArthur say, I will probably remember more than anything else I know about him, as being particularly him, because not only was it funny, but insightful. Kinda has me wondering if he was in some way a third-culture kid.

Speaking of God's prerogative in choosing and regenerating those to whom he chose to show mercy, he said something about how the notion goes against the grain of common mindset, that God should do something like that without asking permission nor even consulting the person beforehand: "He can't do that—we're AMERICANS!!!"

I can see him and RC Sproul running into each other in Heaven: I doubt there will be much, "See? I TOLD you so!", about their different takes on Reformed theology. In fact, I'm thinking I remember that very subject brought up in a conversation between them. —Something along the lines of, "Well, when you get to Heaven, you'll see I was right.", said, of course, in joking fashion.

Loved his verse by verse exegesis in sermons.

That man has finished the race successfully.

Macarthur brought glory to God.

This is the day which Yahweh has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

.
It will be interesting to see what becomes of MacArthur's ministry.

Billy Graham is gone but his ministry is still doing well, whereas Robert Schuller's
ministry fell apart and Catholics took over his facilities. (Were I one of his admirers
I think i might be feeling pretty stupid right about now for giving Schuller money to
pay for one of those monikered panes of glass that adorn the crystal cathedral.)
