Is it Christ like to correct spelling when quoting someone that you're replying to?
Depends.
I have a hard time imagining Jesus would not at least offer to spellcheck something if he thought the writing would reflect poorly on the author, but I have just as difficult a time thinking that spelling is critical to Jesus' purpose. Jesus said he said and did only what his Father told him to say and do. I doubt that included exactly how many beans to have for breakfast, which bush to pee behind, or exactly which 15 square inches to place each foot as he walked from town to town. Thinking we need to be that detailed is a good recipe for legalism.
Legalism kills

.
That is definitely not Christlike, but helping others is.
Using the spell checker, of course.
Also, I now have a fear of spell-check-correcting a word that someone wrote in response to me, into something else that is completely different from what they were saying. I do this with my own posts when I'm not paying attention.
I have found a problem is more likely to occur on the part of the one misspelling, not on the one correcting the misspelling. I do not typically correct others' misspelling because doing so may incur disdain (rather than gratitude), but on the rare occasion when I do, I usually put the correction in brackets [] to acknowledge I have altered the quote. I appreciate it when my misspelling is corrected. I do not appreciate comments to that effect. The commentary is unnecessary and off-topic and if the commentary comes with snide then it's inappropriate. There is always the possibility that multiple misspellings in one post is an indication of sloppiness or lack of diligence or care. A hastily written post is likely to have more errors than one that is written circumspectly. That's not rocket science. Attempting to have a discussion with a hasty person is challenging. However, misspellings could occur for many other reasons, including someone not being very good at spelling or a person not having English as their first or original language. We're not all rocket scientists, either. Those who write for a living are likely to be more accurate than those who don't. In theory, our spell-check feature should preclude misspellings and a proofreading of the post before clicking "Post reply," will double the preclusion. I proofread and still make misteaks

.
The thing is trolls are going to be trolls and if a troll can get under a member's proverbial skin correcting misspellings, then the troll was fed. Just because someone calls me a poopoohead does not mean I am a poopoohead, or that I have to take on the accusation and defend nonsense. Just don't feed the troll. As to the fear of correcting others, perfect love casts out fear because fear has to do with punishment..... and love is patient, kind, forbearing, hopeful, trusting, and does not keep a record of wrongs. Screw those who correct your misspellings

, and remember Josh is always available to extend a brotherly hug

and word of encouragement

(even if I corrected your misspelling

). Then get over yourself and rejoin the fray that is cyberforums.
Be careful with those spell checker thingies, they can be very dangerous. Pay attention to what you're changing misspelled words into.
Dave
Well, spellcheck is the antichrist, don't you know?
