You have to get permission from the govt, which would then out you as someone that doesn't fully support their dictator.

It's worse than that actually. A 2023 state department report (a liberally ran, pro-China worldview state department at the time) stated that:

"only religious groups belonging to one of the five state-sanctioned “patriotic religious associations” representing these religions are permitted to register with the government and are officially permitted to hold worship services. Regulations require clergy to pledge allegiance to the CCP and socialism and to “resist illegal religious activities and religious extremist ideology, and resist infiltration by foreign forces using religion.” On September 1, new administrative measures took effect requiring monasteries, churches, mosques, temples, and other “places of religious activity” to uphold the leadership of the CCP, implement “Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics,” and promote the “Sinicization” of religion. The measures also stipulate that the content of sermons should both reflect “socialist core values” and be integrated with “traditional Chinese culture.”

Meaning, no true Christian can practice their faith openly without being sent to a camp for "reeducation".

I spoke with a Christian from China this is last year and was told they are required to hang president Xi's picture and the whole bit.

I can't imagine it having gotten worse honestly. What was described to me was just persecution; meaning potentially death, imprisonment, the death of your family, (they do threaten to kill your family if you fall out of line) the loss of your job, your social life (they become pariah's)...

Many are apparently happy for the pretense of faith in order to survive.

The Catholics are happily playing along though... Disgusting.

Isn't Communism great?

'The other day, I asked a guy in China who apparently understood English well, what it was like living there. He said, "Can't complain."'

I guess I should probably explain the position I started as fact.

Since the Chinese middle kingdom, no other leader in Chinese history has welded as much power in China as president Xi, outside of Mao... And I'm not sure but Xi might actually have more status than Mao, but it might be a toss up.

It's an atheistic culture, but within the framework of Chinese culture and history, President Xi has the status of our Christ or higher... He has no further checks on his power. He will be emporer/president until his death.

President Xi "thought" is as high if not higher than our Scripture, as it's required reading for all citizens and Chinese life has to conform to his teachings.

Here's a couple older articles that might be good reading even if things have gone beyond this example now.

I don't suppose I know that "god" is the best word for atheists, but the person who weilds as much or more power and status as a Caesar or a Chinese emporer of old, and demands what we consider to be worship from all those around him and says he is, like his people, the son of the dragon, (they consider themselves descendants of dragons) I consider as having given himself the status if not the name of a god.

That was meant as a joke, btw. —A play on words

wow!

I took it as a joke...No worries.

I just figured since I made the comment about Xi making himself a god I might should explain why I used that particular word about an atheist. I probably should have thought about it at the time ..

Literally

You can get arrested in some other countries for criticizing China. Even during a layover in China, they will arrest you if you have a history of criticizing China.

I don't like clickbait. You get these sensationalist headlines, titles, whatever, then this guy comes on to dispel or give his view. At first I couldn't even tell what he believed ("China is EMPTY!" "Billions missing!") Whether or not he is right or accurate, the clickbait is turning me off to videos. I'm not watching any more of his, for awhile. Why would he use the very sensationalist claims he is trying to dispel, in order to get people to watch him?

You might laugh, but all he did was follow the paper trail. That trail has since been destroyed.
