The various uses of those of different persuasions and denominations of this parable are interesting to me.
There is a correlation between such things as "joy to the world", and, "good news to men", with 'difficult' places such as Hebrews 6:4-8 and 10:26-31, and the activity and results of the word of God on these different soils, and the inability we have, sometimes, to identify those who do and who don't belong to Christ, present with the rest of us in the Church universal. In fact, we have the ability to fool ourselves, our hearts justifying us, or our hearts receiving the word with joy and producing fruit (or so we see it to be). I have heard that Calvin addressed it to some extent—this ability of the word to produce a measure of goodness in the reprobate. I hope your pastor will be discussing that phenomenon in his later sermons.
