Read Calvin's Institutes in a year

If you have Calvin's Institutes, great. If you do not, and would like to purchase the 2-volume set, I recommend "Library of Christian Classics" Calvin: Institutes of the Christian Religion vol 1 & 2.

I'll keep this going for a few days. It would be great to get a few people involved as it will, I'm sure, create many good discussions.
I know there are some, perhaps many, who never read the Institutes, if you are one, whether or not you are a Calvinist or not, you will find it very educational. You may even actually learn and understand many points of Calvinism. If you are a Calvinist and haven't read them, you will find them very rewarding. I have had the 2 volume set for probably 20 years, but have never read all of them. I look forward to it.

As I said, I will keep this up for a few days to see who is interested. If no one is, then perhaps another time.

The whole of Book 3 to me was devotional.
I'm sure that depends on one's reference points.

Christ's sacrifice is referred to as "continuing" there.

I will attempt to stick with it. I have read the Institutes but it has been many years ago. I remembered thinking at the time that it should be advised reading in Christian churches. I struggled with the archaic language and phrasing so that I did not retain as much as I would have liked.

The thing about the Institutes is that because it was written by Calvin many avoid it, thinking it is going to be those things of Calvinism that they don't like. But that is only a small part of it relatively. It is the full doctrines of Christianity, the faith that Christians claim and are generally unfamiliar with. Let me know when we start.

This is the issue I have with his commentaries.


I lose interest real quick if I do not understand, usually have the dictionary open when reading his commentaries as well, which then takes my focus what I am reading. However, I keep returning to his commentaries and will eventually get used to the language.

We learn by repetition.

Interesting, having told many people that I never read it, they accused me of not being a Calvinist.

That makes two, I have never read it as well.
