26 And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. 27 He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. 28 The earth produces by itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear. 29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come.” Mark 4:26-29.

What is this parable about?

Mark is written to a Roman audience and reveals Christ as the Son of Man. Thus, the term `kingdom of God,` (which is overall) instead of the `kingdom of heaven,`(subset) as in Matthew. And Matthew was written to the Jews revealing Christ as King and the kingdom/rule from heaven was promised to them. (Dan. 7: 27)

Then we have - `Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers.` (Rom. 15: 8)

So, Jesus when He was manifest on earth He was confirming to His people, (Israel) what God had promised them. And this parable is one that the Lord used to confirm God`s promises to Israel. The term `kingdom of heaven` is not used in Mark for the Romans were not promised this rulership however Gentiles could come into God`s kingdom/rule over all.

The `seed` is the word of God`s rulership - in Mark to the Gentiles, and in Matthew to the Jews.

`...the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which will never be destroyed.` (Dan. 2: 43)

That promise is shortened to the kingdom/rule of heaven. To the Jews, their promised rulership over the nations and to the Gentiles to believe that that God will set up His rulership.

I see it as the first of four parables on fruitfulness of the word of God:
Mk 4:1-20 - the fruitfullness (Mk 4:19) of the word of God in the soil of the church,
Mk 4:21-25 - the more we appropriate the truth of the word, the more truth we will receive in the future,
Mk 4:26-29 - from the word of the gospel, Christ gathers his harvest of fruit (Jn :35),
Mk 4:30-32 - life and growth of the word of God is the work of God, we simply plough, water and weed.

Jesus came to confirm the promises of the Fathers to Israel.

`Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers.` (Rom. 15: 8)

Thus, it is not for us to make the Lord`s confirmation to Israel as about US.

Did you put this response on the wrong post?

Or do you think your response relates to Mk 4:1-32?

The kingdom of God or kingdom of heaven is God's government here on Earth. Shortly before Jesus touches down on Earth for a full planetary takeover there will be a series of harvests - obliterations. Most of the planet's population will be taken out.

Here we see the beginning of the harvests:

Isaiah 17 (Obliteration of Israel's neighbors)
5 It shall be as when the harvester gathers the grain,
And reaps the heads with his arm;
It shall be as he who gathers heads of grain
In the Valley of Rephaim.

Isaiah 18 (Obliteration of a powerful friend of Israel)
[I think the harvest below is referring to Isaiah 17.]
4 For so the Lord said to me,
“I will take My rest,
And I will [b]look from My dwelling place
Like clear heat in sunshine,
Like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.”
5 For before the harvest, when the bud is perfect
And the sour grape is ripening in the flower,
He will both cut off the sprigs with pruning hooks
And take away and cut down the branches.
6 They will be left together for the mountain birds of prey
And for the beasts of the earth;
The birds of prey will summer on them,
And all the beasts of the earth will winter on them.

The kingdom of God or kingdom of heaven is God's government here on Earth.
However, authoritative NT apostolic teaching is that the kingdom of God is now (Lk 11:20),
it is invisible and within (Lk 11:20-21),
it is everlasting (Lk 1:33), therefore, there is no other kingdom of God,
it was set up at Christ's first coming - "in the time of those kings" (Da 2:40-43); i.e., the Roman empire (Da 2:40-43) which conquered the Greek empire (Da 2:39, 8:21). The messianic kingdom was set up during the past Roman empire, at the first coming of Christ (Mt 12:28).

Hi Eleanor,

The Lord confirming the promises of the fathers to Israel, I believe, relates to all the parables.

Are you saying I should use "people of God" rather than "church" in post #4?

Rather to say Israel as that is whom the Lord is referring to. The promises of the father were made to Israel, but as we know it that generation (in Israel) did not receive Him, however He will by His Holy Spirit open the eyes of those in Israel, at the end of the trib. (Zech. 12: 7 - 10)

There is one people of God, the one olive tree of the NT church, of both OT and NT believers (Ro 11).

Jesus' teachings are for the whole people of God.

When we read God`s word we learn about God, His character and His purposes, however there is no scripture that says we are to make God`s word all about us. Though of course, I suspect people would only take bits and pieces and not the nasty bits.

The Olive tree - Jesus is who we are connected into. This does not mean that the nation of Israel, though blinded and cut off will not be connected again to Christ, their Messiah.

Why did God make the nation of Israel, and then spend over 1,500 years with them only to cast the nation aside for all time? God is omniscient, all knowing and has factored in man`s rebelliousness. God`s plans and purposes do NOT depend on man, but on Christ.

That's pretty plain in Heb 11:23: they will grafted back into the NT church IF (not "when") they do not persist in unbelief.
In the meantime, they are being condemned for the last 2,000 years now, and counting.
That's a lot of condemned "people of God."

Jesus said the kingdom was taken away from them and given to the Gentiles (Mt 21:43), that not only wouild outsiders be brought into the kingdom, but that the sons will be put out in order to do so (Ro 11:11-14).

And also all the Gentiles not in the B/C. Just as well God made provision for that. All who are not the OT saints and the B/C will be judged according to their works, (motives). (Rev. 20: 13)

BTW it is only in this and the last century that there has been such a number on earth.

Yes, the rulership, (kingdom as promised) would be taken from that nation, (when Jesus was on earth) and given to the nation of Israel looking for their Messiah and finally receiving Him. (Mal. 3: 16 & 17, Zech. 12: 7 - 10)

The B/C is NOT `a nation,` but called out of all the nations. (Matt. 21: 43)

Rom. 11: 11 - 14. Israel was cast away for a time, (Rom. 11: 1) but God in His mercy will restore them as a nation. Meanwhile they having been cast aside (for a time) gave room for us Gentiles to come into Christ.

All will be judged according to their belief in Jesus Christ.
Those who have never heard of him will be judged according to their conscience, which will condemn them because they have all sinned against it.
God's people from Abraham to Christ will be judged by their faith in the promise (Ge 15:5, seed; Jesus Christ, Gal 3:16).

What is this parable about?

The growth of the kingdom of God through the Word (teaching, learning). At the end of time--or possibly when God wants to solidify the impact of a Christian group--there is a harvest (tentative or ultimate).

Improving on the parables.
