ESV Genesis 1:

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
What does it mean?

Let's continue with the rest of the verse:

And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”
Like God, man has authority. We have authority over the earth and everything on it.

Psalm 8 echoes the same idea:

4 What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You have made him a little lower than God and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You have made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet.
That's meaning #1.

2. King James Bible, Gen 2:

7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Man receives a breath from God. This breath generates his soul, which identifies his independent selfhood. Like the living God, we are also living. We are living images of God.

3. Exodus 20:

4“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them or serve them.
We are made in the image of God. We do not worship other humans (images) or man-made objects (images).

4. We should not curse fellow human beings. NET James 3:

9 With it [the tongue] we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse people made in God’s image. 10 From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. These things should not be so, my brothers and sisters.
5. Colossians 1:

15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
Jesus was the true type of the image of God. We are only shadow-type of the image of God. We are foils for the true image.

19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
In Christ, we can be better image-bearers of God. Romans 8:

29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
This is the sanctification process. We can have an intimate relationship with God. As we grow spiritually, we become more and more like God. The Paraclete is the deposit of this God-image in us.

6. Eventually, 2 Corinthians 3:

18 we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.
After our resurrection, our earthly image of God will be transformed into a heavenly, glorified image of God.

We are created in God's image. We are like God. We can relate to God. We have the potential to be sinless.

26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.
What does it mean?
What does it mean?

Let's continue with the rest of the verse:

Why ask that question in that way?
You skipped over verse 27.
The answer was found in verse 27.

Genesis 1:26-27
English Standard Version
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.

Verse 26 is God planning and designing for man's function and purpose in this creation.
Verse 27 speaks of man's soul to be created. Created in His image.

Only man has a soul created in His image. Capable of eternal life.
Animal souls are generic. Disposable souls.

Thanks for the reply.
So God created man in his own image,

male and female he created them.

What would the above add to my OP that I have not said already?

Thanks for the reply.

What would the above add to my OP that I have not said already?

What you mentioned? And, asked about?
Was God planning and designing for how he was to create man.
No the actual creation was yet taking place.

Man (male and female) souls were created instantly in verse 27.
Created instantly, and 'out from nothing."
The Hebrew word 'bara' indicates that man's soul was created by God directly, and out from nothing.

In Genesis 2? That was not the same process of creating man. Not like found in Genesis 1:27.
For the Hebrew does not say the body was "created out from nothing."[bara]

In contrast to Genesis 1:27?
Man's body was not created out from nothing. Genesis 2:7
Instead, the Lord collected elements from the earth and "molded and formed" (jatsar) a body out
from something that had already been created. It was "some sort of mud."

I say that because there are some who do not know the Hebrew. They tried to concoct a concept that there were two creations of man... even two different kinds of men...

Might as well cover that aspect for clarification.

IMAGE: Your image is your image. Nobody should use it for thier own purposes without your consent. LIKENESS : Your likeness is not as obvious. It is your “semblance. resemble. Then there is carbon copy , mirror image as likeness .

It is used Acts 14 when Paul laid his hands and the gospel healed The unbeliever no faith. When they saw it they made Paul and Apollos into gods in the likeness of men . . looking to the temporal dying things seen and not the eternal vision of faith

it what the Charismatics do called sigh gifts lay on of hands calling it a healing ,as if God was served by the dying hands of mankind .

Psalm 8 echoes the same idea

I'm curious about the the Hebrew in vs 5, sometimes translated Angels; other ones, translate God; still others, Heavenly Beings.

But, curiously, Young's Literal says, "And causest him to lack a little of Godhead, And with honour and majesty compassest him." —which, (off-topic), might have something to do with the "one person — two natures" idea of Jesus Christ.

But if, as seems elsewhere to be the case, that Christ was for a little while "less than the angels", (and no, I don't think that means anything except that he was reduced to man's state as a temporal being, and not less God than even the angels), then if we are to say that WE are for a little while less than the angels, being made in the image of God is something we are (though imperfectly for a time) that the angels even in their perfection are not.

Hi, one of things on the back burner.

Greek Angelos . . .Messengers. . not Angel. Angel a fake word sound the same has a totally different meaning inspired by the father of lies .
Malachi as angel in Hebrew. both destroying the usage word "messenger" as sons of God, apostles sent with the gospel

Like Jesus the prophet/ apostle .How beautiful are the messenger feet shod with the gospel of our Father. The invisible head (not a band of angels) as if God needed help from the by standers, or peanut gallery .

He has all the power "let there be" to both will, reveal his will working in us. . . . . empowering dying mankind do it according to His good pleasure. . Not the pleasure of a imaginary legion of disembodied spirit gods. . some call angels other call patron saints

The gospel key "both" . Jesus the Son of man did the will empowered by the father with delight. Some like Jonah murmured and complained and would rather die than see the result of God great mercy seasoned with His grace as a labor of His love

Philippians 2: 13-14 For it is God (not angels ) which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Do all things without murmurings and disputings:

Again just like the idea of "patron saints" a legion of disembodied workers with a familiar spirits .(3500 and rising) giving the illusion of life after one takes their last breath of oxygen . Limbo and purgatory as there hell, final sufferings .(The doctrine of wondering) maybe how?

And not our daily sufferings Hell, strengthened by our daily bread, yoked with Him (not a legion of angels) a fake creation

Therefore (limbo /purgatory not receiving the end of Christ faith as a labor of His love the salvation of ones soul Mixed with another fake word apostle "sent messenger" into highly exalted venerable dying mankind . All of the fake words as one Rather than messenger as a apostle (sent messenger). the illusion of other spirit being gods.

One God, the Spirit of messenger sent out two by two

A whole legion as disembodied spirit gods that some call patron saints as a law of the fathers passed on from the Pharisees. The Sadducees no belief in angels. "Angel mysteries invisible creation" Not spoken of.

In that way making the idea of a invisible head Christ the one Spirit that dwells in the believer, the Spirit of Christ the husband ,to no effect so they can serve a fake words . violating' the warning not to add new meaning to one word it can change all the commandments

Things like siting down and entertaining something not seen (angel ) rather than a brother or sister in Christ sent as a messenger .or perhaps one sent to you the stranger by the same spirit of faith as it is written with the finger of God

I would think remove the fake words completely

Please quote the verse.
Literal Standard Version: "You make him a little lower than the gods [[or God]], | And surround him with glory and majesty."

Young's Literal Translation: "And causest him to lack a little of Godhead, And with honour and majesty compassest him."

Brenton Septuagint Translation: "Thou madest him a little less than angels, thou hast crowned him with glory and honour;"

"Elohim" can be several different things.

I also notice that all the classic versions say "him" while many, if not most, of the modern translations use "them". Not sure if that is a concession to modern language or a difference of manuscript.
