Is Was that the same as IRC?
Not exactly. You would get a dial up modem, connect your phone to it, and connect to a bulletin board. Sometimes they had interconnectivity through a mail tosser, or some other mechanism that would have the bulletin board connect to some service to download and upload messages. You could play games, and leave messages to other users. If the bulletin board was special, it could have more than one person connected at the same time. (Usually two, though some people put money into it and had extra connections, and sometimes even internet access. (VERY old, very basic internet access.)

okay, now I remember a techie friend showing me that sort of thing back around '94.
