My wife and I are planning a European cruise for our thirtieth anniversary and I'm soliciting recommendations and advice from friends. We've been on Caribbean cruises on the cheaper lines (like Carnival) so are familiar with cruises in general. We're looking for a more luxury line and a trip between 7 and 14 nights. We're investigating non-cruise European packages (England, Scotland, France, Spain, Germany, etc.) but this op is about cruises on the Mediterranean side of Europe. We haven't narrowed the field to east-Med, west-med or all-Med. We want this trip to have some diversity so we're not looking to spend all our ports in one country. We'll go back and do a Spain trip or an Italy or Greece trip (now that we're retired, we're planning to do quarterly travels inside the US and yearly or bi-yearly cruises internationally). We're interested in history and culture and in past travels we've gone out on our own and hung out with the locals for a day. We're not fluent in any other language but English.

Any recommendations where to go, what to see, and what cruise lines to investigate? What to look out for (risks)?

Alaska

Re-read the first sentence, please. Alaska is beautiful and a cruise there would be equally enjoyable, but Alaska is not in Europe and, my persuasive powers notwithstanding, I doubt I can persuade the captain of a European cruise to make stop or three in Alaska ;). Thanks for the suggestion, though. Any recommendations in Europe?

I was saying it like I would to a family member, as in, "Alaska would be a better choice". Plain conversation works that way, sometimes. Nothing wrong with it.
