Greetings all,

Question, is anyone on this forum a member of their Churches choir? I chant at my Church and was just curious to see if there were fellow music geeks lol!

Saint Porphyrios of Athens has a wonderful quote about the importance of singing in Church, “Devotion to and occupation with the hymns and readings is a great thing in my view – a very great thing, because in that way a person is sanctified without realizing it. He acquires love and humility and everything as he hears the words of the saints in the various liturgical books. We need to dwell on this. This needs to be our daily occupation and delight in the Church.” (Wounded by Love, page 78.)

He is speaking of course about the Orthodox faith but his words definitely have meaning for all Christian faith traditions.

In the Assemblies of God denomination, the "Church Choir" has devolved into the "Worship team", that performs in "soft Rock style"for the Congregation. Some sing along, and some of us just listen to the presentation which is generally so LOUD that you can't hear yourself think. Our church has ear plugs available in the lobby. I just turn my hearing aids off.
